If "classic" boats made of fiberglass are allowed, then allow me to say that on July 20, 1969, I was on a Cal 30 sloop (similar to the one pictured below) somewhere on Lake Huron.

I was part of a six-man crew that year for the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Race. No TV of course, but we did listen to Neil Armstrong's famous speech on the radio. Perhaps I shall be obliged to repost this story on the 50th anniversary, "Where were you when . . ."

Sailors have a special way of looking at the sea. I will never forget the stare of the captain of the Aran Islands to Galway ferry before deciding to cross the bay, or not.

Damn! That is a shitload of sail compared to the size of the hull. Bet that's a bit of a 'brown trouser ride'.

Been knee deep in water cranking the jib winch in many races.

Also been there while sailing solo in a 16 footer.

The German ship Pamir which, in 1949, became the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn. She capsized and sank in September 1957 in a hurricane off the Azores, with the loss of 80 crew.
