The civility rule breaks down because of clueless mods like chillzero that can't read sarcasm.

A "sarchasm" issue.

If the rule was more loosely enforced or interpreted it wouldn't be an issue. Ultimately, its their forum and they can run however they please.

What a fine, absolutely meaningless sentiment. Nobody gives a flying fuck in a rolling donut about anyone's humanity, there, here, or anywhere else. Pretending to do so doesn't make it so.

It does make a pretty catchphrase though, I'll grant you that.

Shermerland was different in like, '97 or '98. But that was the wild west back then.

The BA's site is a good one. Skepticfriends is good too. As with here.

Everyone knows where they stand.

The thing about JREF is no one knows where they stand.

Moochie, you said that "competence is at least 50% in the eye of the beholder" somewhere. May be this thread. I can't be bothered to look.

I can be bothered to say that's crap. Competence can be evaluated in an objective manner, if proper performance standards and measurements are in place. (Ya, I know I sound like a corporate drone). I doubt those exist at JREF, because the way the job is done by the various individuals doing it shows little consistency in almost any aspect.

It all stems from a lack of leadership. There is no "mission statement" that energies, rules, etc. can be aligned with. The JREF must decide what page it wants to be on, and get everyone else at least aware of what that page is. What do they want to be? What do they want to do? It's simple, after that, to do things that support those goals.

I was never a mod there, nor did I ever have even the slightest urge to deal with that BS, so those with first hand experience, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just know what I see from the outside.

Freethought forum is good too. A lot of old-time JREF people still post there, and it's a free speech forum. If I felt I had more time to spend onine, I'd probably waste my time there rather than JREF.

JREF is the premiere skeptic forum, but some people seem to think it's the only forum skeptics should post at. I happen to think people should spend their time where they enjoy spending their time.

Right on the nose. My personal opinion is a lot of what is perceived as favoritism/incompetence is an inevitable consequence of T3H RULEZ!!!!!1!

In fact it would be a waste if skeptics only kept to each other's company.

I think it's important to respect other posters' humanity, even if you don't respect your own.

I think it's important, too. I just think it's futile to try to enforce it because it's too subjective. It's nearly impossible to do without either being perceived as playing favorites or unintentionally playing favorites. It's a headache they don't need when instead they can allow people to look out for their own feelings--and to point it out themselves when someone's made a personal attack instead of an attack against the argument.

Couldn't agree more. I think I've said the same there on more than one occasion, and that if I had my way, I'd get rid of the reporting feature altogether. It seems to me that it's used far too often by people trying to gain leverage in interpersonal squabbles, a scenario in which the moderators just can't win.

I sort of feel sorry for Mods. Especially the top mods, at TOP. Their online experience is by nature filled with strife, conflict and decisions to be made.

This must suck. You can tell it eventually turns them all into petty tyrants.

The difference is, here, no bully has a banstick, a big eraser, or the ability to actually bully anyone with software.

At the one TAM I managed to attend, I was left with a less-than-stellar impression of Shermer.

Percentage wise we approach 100%. Don't fuck up the percentage.

Unfortunately, you "getting it" seems more and more doubtful.
