The end of the world

Post by Nyarlathotep » Wed Dec 19, 2012 4:26 pm

Does anyone know anyone else who actually thinks the world is going to end on Friday? We all joke about it. But I can't think of a single person among my friends, family, co-workers, casual acquaintances or even people I know on Facebook (and I know a lot of people on Facebook who buy into a lot of other stupid nonsense) who actually gives any credence to the fact that the world is going to end on the 21st. Even during the build-up to Y2K I knew at least one guy who thought the poopy was going to hit the fan. But this time around, nada.

Just curious how pervasive this idea actually is, beyond it being comedy fodder.

I doubt you do, even if you beleive hetero marriage is going to be outlawed as hate speech.

But I am really curious as to how seriously this is actually being taken.

Did the Mayans live in Australia? I think not. Give it time. Don't forget to duck. Not that it will help.

Mexico City is built on the site of the old Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan not the old Mayan capital of Tikal. The Mayans were on the Yucatan Penninsula, and I am not sure whether that's in the same time zone as Mexico City or not and I am too lazy to look it up. Not to mention I have to leave in about two minutes.

Also, every time I see a picture of the 'Mayan Calendar' when someone talks about this, they always show the Aztec Calendar stone instead, the 'Mayan Calendar' that supposedly predicts this looks nothing like the Aztec Calendar stone. It's a tiny thing, but it drives me nuts.

I will avoid calling attention to the humorous psycho-sexual connotations of this remark.

Carry on.
