Could it be Apocalypse fatigue? Hasn't been very long since Camping. Even the slow-witted should catch on if too many of these predictions are made too close together.
Besides, Camping at least used the Bible, something most Americans at least purport to believe in. The Mayans were heathens. It doesn't exactly fit in with preexisting religious woo so well.
