Some recent developments in an ongoing scandal here:

First, I think a bit of background is necessary to make sense of this story. Moritomo Gakuen is or was a private youchi-en (like a kindergarten or nursery school) run by an ultranationalist ideologue. Allegedly, Prime Minister Abe's wife, Akie made a donation to the school in the PM's name, although both she and the PM denied it. But according to Wikipedia, the government sold a plot of land to the school for only 14% of its fair value. So there are questions about who approved that sale. Selling government land for less than fair value is essentially the same thing as a taxpayer subsidy. According to Wikipedia:
Moritomo Gakuen is a Japanese private school operator, most known for its involvement in a 2017 political scandal implicating Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and his wife, Akie Abe.

Moritomo Gakuen began as a kindergarten (preschool) operated by Yasunori Kagoike. Kagoike implemented a nationalist curriculum at the school which included daily recitations of the Imperial Rescript on Education, a practice employed at schools in the Empire of Japan from 1890 to 1945.[1]

Kagoike sought to expand the kindergarten into a full-fledged elementary school and applied to buy a parcel of government-owned real estate in 2013, but was turned down as he could not pay a satisfactory price to the government. He was able to negotiate a 10-year lease for the property by 2015, and named Akie Abe as honorary principal of the elementary school, Mizuho no Kuni.[1]

The scandal began when Asahi Shimbun reported on February 9, 2017 that the central government of Japan had sold the 8,770 square meter property in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture to Moritomo Gakuen for around ¥134 million, about 14% of the land's estimated value.[2][3] In Diet hearings later that month, the Ministry of Finance explained that all records of the transaction had been destroyed, other than the contract itself, in compliance with government document retention laws which allowed the documents to be designated for retention for less than one year.[1]

As the scandal unfolded, Abe resigned from her position as honorary principal in late February. Prior to her resignation, Moritomo Gakuen removed a message from Akie endorsing the school, praising its nationalistic moral education program.[2][3]

Osaka prosecutors eventually suspected that Kagoike and his wife had falsified the numbers of teachers and students at the school, and the expected construction costs, when applying for state subsidies. Kagoike and his wife were arrested in July on charges of fraud.[4][5]
Osaka City filed suit against Moritomo Gakuen in 2017, demanding the return of over 61 million yen of subsidies improperly received in connection with the Koto Moritomo Gakuen day care center in Yodogawa Ward.[6]
Moritomo Gakuen filed for civil rehabilitation (bankruptcy restructuring) proceedings in October 2017, seeking to write off around 97% of its approximately 3 billion yen debt burden.[7]
So maybe this guy is just a big fraud who makes up all kinds of lies (even under oath), and the PM and his wife have no connection. It's conceivable. Maybe he was just a talented con-artist who claimed to be connected to the PM as a way to manipulate other people into getting things he wanted.

But anyway, here are the new developments in this story since yesterday Japan time:

Entire section of Moritomo file deleted before submittal to Diet
An entire section providing background to a dubious sale of state-owned land as well as wording about negotiations were deleted from a document submitted to lawmakers, The Asahi Shimbun has found.

The original document was compiled in 2016, when the Finance Ministry’s Kinki Local Finance Bureau signed a contract with school operator Moritomo Gakuen for the sale of the land in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture.

One background section, covering almost an entire page, explained the process leading up to the signing in May 2015 of a leasing arrangement between the bureau and Moritomo Gakuen.

However, this section was missing from the copy presented to Diet members, who were demanding an explanation on why Moritomo Gakuen obtained a huge discount for the land.

A copy of the same contents was again presented by Finance Ministry officials to lawmakers on March 8.

The Asahi Shimbun, which broke the land-sale story in February 2017, confirmed the contents of documents compiled at the bureau to finalize the leasing arrangement in May 2015 and the later sale of the same plot of land in June 2016.

Not only was the background section missing from the copy submitted to the Diet, but also wording in other parts had either been deleted or changed apparently to obscure the fact that negotiations were conducted between the bureau and Moritomo Gakuen, which had planned to open a private elementary school on the land.
Defender of Moritomo land sale to resign as tax agency chief
Nobuhisa Sagawa, whose repeated claims about documents related to the Moritomo Gakuen scandal proved inaccurate, intends to resign as commissioner of the National Tax Agency, sources said March 9.

As director-general of the Finance Ministry’s Financial Bureau, Sagawa frequently appeared in the Diet in 2017 to defend the sale of state-owned land in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, to Moritomo Gakuen, a private school operator.

In addition to stating there were no problems with how the sale was finalized, Sagawa said all documents related to the negotiations for the deal had been discarded.

However, the Finance Ministry has since released a number of those supposedly discarded documents.
Official in charge of murky land sale apparently commits suicide
OSAKA (Kyodo) -- A government official involved in a state-owned land sale to a school operator in Osaka at the center of favoritism allegations leveled at Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died recently in an apparent suicide, investigative sources said Friday.

The revelation comes at a time when opposition parties are preparing to question the government after a major daily newspaper alleged last Friday that relevant Finance Ministry documents have been doctored. The controversial land deal recently drew fresh attention but it is unclear whether the official's death is related to the dubious transaction.

The male official of the Finance Ministry's Kinki regional bureau was found dead on Wednesday at his home in Kobe, western Japan, the sources said, without disclosing other details.

In Tokyo, Finance Minister Taro Aso told reporters that he has heard about the man's death.

The Kinki bureau official belonged to a department in charge of the land transaction last February, when the issue first came to light.

The 8,770-square-meter plot in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, was sold to Moritomo Gakuen in June 2016 for about 134 million yen ($1.26 million) to build a new elementary school, compared with its appraised value of 956 million yen.

The ministry has said the heavily discounted price of the land was due to the cost of removing buried waste at the site. But the Board of Audit of Japan said in November the discount happened because the price was not properly calculated.

Government officials are suspected of having reduced the price as Abe's wife, Akie, was briefly appointed as the honorary principal of the envisioned school.

Following The Asahi Shimbun report, the opposition camp demanded that the ministry submit the original documents, which Asahi reported have been doctored.

But the ministry on Thursday released what are essentially the same documents as those previously disclosed to lawmakers and refused to clarify whether they have been revised as reported, citing a continuing internal probe.

Moritomo Gakuen, headed by Yasunori Kagoike, had also sought donations while referring to the school as the "elementary school in honor of Shinzo Abe," prompting the premier to lodge a protest for using his name without permission.
So, very curious. Doctored documents that government officials had previously claimed were destroyed; an official resigning and another committing suicide. The guy at the center of it all seems like a very slimy character. Not much different from a holocaust denier.

とても面白いだ。

It certainly fits the common complaint that the ruling and largely dominant post-war party of Japan is at best beholden to what we would call in Freedom "White Supremacists" or comprised of them at worse.

I think a "tear-jerker" just means sentimental. Something that's supposed to make you cry, like Old Yeller or Titanic.

Hans Christian Anderson was also famous for them, e.g., The Little Match Girl or even The Little Mermaid (the original, not the Disney version with the happy ending).

Some recent developments in an ongoing scandal here ...
I haven’t followed this scandal very closely, but from what I saw when it first broke, I thought the whole Kagoike family were nuttier than a basket of fruitcakes. And that’s before you even get to their nationalist ideology. In fact, I remember thinking, “They need a PR consultant to tell them to stop doing those crazy press conferences. Especially the mother and son.”

Further developments today:

Finance Ministry admits to altering Moritomo documents, says references to Abe and wife were deleted
The Finance Ministry admitted Monday to having altered documents over a discounted state land sale at the center of cronyism allegations against Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with references to both Abe and his wife, who was involved in a school project at the site, being deleted, ruling party lawmakers said.

The ministry’s admission made to lawmakers could increase calls for the head of Finance Minister Taro Aso, a key Abe ally — as well for the prime minister himself to step down to take responsibility over the matter.

The party lawmakers said 14 of the original documents were rewritten by the ministry after the revelation of the scandal in February last year. Several lawmakers who were also mentioned in the original documents — former trade minister Takeo Hiranuma, LDP veteran Yoshitada Konoike, former Upper House lawmaker Issei Kitagawa and the late Kunio Hatoyama, former internal affairs minister — were also deleted. The lawmakers’ secretaries had been speaking with the Finance Ministry about the Moritomo land deal. It was unclear who had asked for their names to be removed.

The ministry will consider disciplining officials involved in the land sale, both at the ministry’s headquarters in Tokyo and its Kinki bureau, which covers the Osaka region, the sources said.

The original documents quoted Moritomo Gakuen, operator of an elementary school planned to be built at the site in Osaka, as saying Akie had recommended the school project “move forward because it is a good plot of land.” They also said she inspected Moritomo and gave a speech there in April 2014.

An online article attached to the original version, which said Akie was “moved to tears by the school’s education policy” when she visited the nationalist school operator, was also erased in the papers later disclosed to Diet members.

Akie was initially named honorary principal of the elementary school, but gave up the post after a scandal involving the controversial state land deal came to light in February last year. Opposition parties claim the Finance Ministry drastically reduced the land price, taking into consideration Akie’s role in the project.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said he sees no need for Aso to resign, telling a news conference that the finance minister “should lead the ministry’s thorough investigation to get to the bottom of” the scandal.

The top spokesman pledged that the government will “deal seriously with” the issue. The scandal over the heavily discounted land sale contributed to a decline in his support rate last year before the doctoring allegations reignited the issue this month.

Senior members of opposition parties lined up Monday to call for Abe — and even the entire Cabinet — to resign over the admission.

“Even if Aso resigns to take the blame, that won’t be enough for the public. The Abe Cabinet should resign en masse,” a member of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) said.

Timber tower construction is the current obsession of architects, with new projects claiming to be the world’s next tallest popping up all over the globe. But this latest proposal from Japanese company Sumitomo Forestry Co. and architects Nikken Sekkei would blow everything else out of the water, as they have announced plans for the world’s first supertall wood structured skyscraper in Tokyo.

At 1,148 feet tall, the proposal outpaces similar timber-structured highrise proposals including Perkins + Will’s River Beech Tower and PLP Architecture’s Oakwood Tower.

Early estimates indicated that W350 would use more than 6.5 million cubic feet of wood and would cost upwards of 600 billion yen ($5.6 billion USD). The building would not be a pure wood timber building, but rather a hybrid system constructed with a 9:1 ratio of wood to steel capable of handling Tokyo’s high seismic activity.

The following beats the story of the Japanese Original politician who teaches a young girl with a dead pigeon because:

Tokyo lesbian love anime art/photography exhibition cancelled, thighs suspected as sticking point

Image
Cancellation of yuri event comes mere days before scheduled opening in one of Tokyo’s major anime fan neighborhoods.

Anyone who was planning to go to the opening of Yuri Exhibition 2018 in Tokyo this coming Saturday now needs to make new plans for the weekend. The organizers of the event have announced that the gathering of fans and creators of lesbian romance anime and manga (called “yuri”) has been cancelled.

The exhibition was scheduled to be held in the event space of department store Marui’s branch in the Ikebukuro neighborhood, which in recent years has joined Akihabara and Nakano as one of the city’s major centers of otaku culture. The annual Yuri Exhibition (or Yuri-ten, in Japanese) began in 2016, and this year’s Tokyo iteration was slated to run from March 17 to March 25.

On the event’s official website, the cancellation notice vaguely defines the reason as:
“The situation has become such that it would be difficult for all creators who originally intended to participate to display and sell their works at the event, so we have decided to cancel holding Yuri Exhibition at Marui Ikebukuro.”
While the explanation is light on details, some noticed that this isn’t the only Marui Ikebukuro event to be scrapped this month. On March 2, the World of Thigh Photography exhibition of the works of prolific thigh photographer Yuria, which was scheduled to take place at the department store from March 9 to 26, was also suddenly cancelled, again with organizers citing nebulous “circumstances.”
