What's purpose of the metal coil near the handset?

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

I'm guessing that's a spring intended to keep the cord coiled. That way she could move around and the handset cord wouldn't flop all over the desk and chair, etc.

Here is my town of Carson City. The photo is undated, but thought to be 1864 or 1865.

If you look closely, you will see it says "Ormsby House" on the side of one of the buildings. That was going as a hotel/casino in the same spot (albeit a newer buliding) right up until the early 2000s.

For a long, long time, if you drove between Carson City and Reno, you would come upon an empty field with a slab of concrete laid out on it and a sign saying "Future site of (some name I don't remember) Casino". That sign and the slab of concrete had to have been there a good 20 or 30 years. The sign is gone now, so whoever was goign to build it must have given up eventually, but it was there a long time and nothing has been built on that spot to this day.

There was also the guy who played Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies, Max Baer. He wanted to build a Beverly Hillbillies themed casino on the site of a shuttered Wal-Mart for quite a few years. His plan to have a 100 foot tall flaming oil derrick in the parking lot was a major point of contention with the city. Anyhoo, that never was built either, but there was a sign on the property advertising it for years too.

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

I had one of those "tommy guns" when I was a kid. They were very sturdy, took a real beating while we played "army guys" and stuff.

This has come up before.

In this case the foreign country isn't the past. It's California.
