That is a good one! Seriously!

My favorite--part of the genesis of this tedious running gag . . . but not as tedious as Your Gram's Mom--is the report from a Sports Dude running the Boston Marathon. At some point near the end, maybe even Heart Break Hill, a spectator held the sign: "If it was easy, it'd be Your Mom!"

It’s not learning the language. It’s how many weeks you have to study the poisonous fauna, so you don’t immediately die when you get there.

Though I am surprised that Chinese--which one?!!!--is easier, relatively speaking, than Japanese. Chinese is tonal, and it has sounds that not really in English. Pompous Pricks decided to fuck around with the transliterations--"if you cannot understand it, you are unworthy," which is why we all got stuck with "Peking" and "Tse Tung" not knowing a "P" is suppose to be a "B" and "T" is a "D" sound!

There is no hiragana of Chinese that I am aware of. That is the "consonant-vowel" representation which is "like" an alphabet in that if you know the pronunciation, you can at least figure out how to pronounce a word. Chinese? Hope you like ideograms!

So color me surprised. Maybe Chinese has a more "English" syntax? That barrier can prove very cumbersome. English tends to be: [His various irrelevant subordinated clauses--Ed.], Subject-Verb-Object. Adjectives directly modify their nouns. Adverbs their verbs.

Japanese?

Maybe, like, perhaps, 多分, the topic which is not the subject but could be if there is no subject unless there is Verb.

Another "Big Ass Barrier" to a language is the lack of cognates upon which you can hang shemp Mom on. With English/German and various Romance Languages, there are words that are at least similar enough that they make "sense." I joke that there are only about 100 words in Japanese . . . and they are all "kyūgyūnokedo" or some such nonsense. Same with Chinese, but Chinese is like Japanese spoken with a French accent.

Found a web site about that:
https://www.effectivelanguagelearning.c ... difficulty

Apparently they rank Japanese as the most difficult language for English speakers to learn.

The other "Category V" languages are Arabic, Korean and Chinese (Cantonese) and Chinese (Mandarin). But Japanese has an asterisk.
* Languages preceded by asterisks are usually more difficult for native English speakers to learn than other languages in the same category.
The Category V languages all involve completely different writing systems than English.
Most European languages use the same alphabet that we do, or a similar one.

Other than some German (and possibly a smidge of Spanish and French) that I took in middle school, which I mostly lost due to disuse, Japanese is really my only foreign language so I can't really compare it with Chinese. I imagine Chinese would be harder in some ways, like using tones and learning pronunciations. Learning to pronounce Japanese words is not particularly difficult. It's mostly other things that make it difficult. Different levels of politeness. The fact that the subject of the sentence often goes unsaid and must be inferred from the context. The grammar, and so on.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

I know countless of English speaker who try or have to speak Japanese at varying levels of incompetence. I have yet to meet anyone I would consider fluent, but that is really impossible for most beyond the age of 9ish-13ish when your parietotemporal cortices thingies all calcify and you are stuck thinking 80's music is "da bomb." Why it is so hard for young adults to us to speak without accents.

I think all I know who have achieved a higher level of incompetence with Japanese do what you did/do: live in Japan and use it daily. We fap over "immersion" and all of that, but that is because we ["We?"--Ed.] try to recreate immersion. It is completely true in any foreign country with a language I have failed to master ["Master?"--Ed.], you quickly learn how to ask where the food is, how much it costs, and where to shit/piss without ending up in prison. You cannot have true "immersion" if you can then leave the confines and speak your native tongue.

Long before we defiled the same spaces in Al Gore's Internet, a Japanese teacher--gaijin--married to じつは日本お女様 advised me that to learn Japanese I had to do what he did: find a Japanese girl and marry her. "I had to wait until she went to another section of the bookstore," he confessed, "before I could tell you that!" They both taught Japanese.

Not to delve into your Private Life, but it is as simple as wanting to know what Not to Say to Piss-Off Wifu--or to say to Piss-Off Wifu  , to actually wanting to know what your kids are babbling about when they returned from grade school, let alone figure out whom 娘様 is dating and where 息子さん put your 触手責め1変態.

You cannot recreate that pressure/incentive to learn a language in a class room.

That being written, I know only one person who is "fluent" in Chinese, and he has lived there longer than either of us have been defiling this planet. I also do not know how "fluent" he actually is. No way of knowing. I do not know an Ass-Raping Chinamanese person who has heard him speak who can tell me whether or not he "sounds" right. For gaijin nihongo the That Guy actor whose videos I linked is the best example where he plays "bad Japanese": "Toe-Tey-Moe WA-Rrrrooee desooYO!" then uses his own which, at least, sounds not totally unlike Japanese as I hear "The Natives" speak it.

I have no idea what to make that when I looked up "tentacle" in my handy-dandy computer dictionary, it suggested THAT immediately with the definition! This is why Gram cannot get a date with a Loli.
