The girl "we buy in bulk" is someone the main character sort of has interest in. Then he learns:
She is his mother.
His father cloned her after she died. Whenever she dies he simply revives one of the many clones he made of her. All of the cloning has rendered her into a rather emotionless entity.
So, I give credit to the cosplayers portraying her, multiply, as cold even when trying to give comfort.
