Statesman wrote:Texas judge interrupts jury, says God told him defendant is not guilty

A state district judge in Comal County said God told him to intervene in jury deliberations to sway jurors to return a not guilty verdict in the trial of a Buda woman accused of trafficking a teen girl for sex.

Judge Jack Robison apologized to jurors for the interruption, but defended his actions by telling them “when God tells me I gotta do something, I gotta do it,” according to the Herald-Zeitung in New Braunfels.

The jury went against the judge’s wishes, finding Gloria Romero-Perez guilty of continuous trafficking of a person and later sentenced her to 25 years in prison. They found her not guilty of a separate charge of sale or purchase of a child.

I read that. Don't understand. :notsure:

But that person should not be a judge.

Hey! This isn't the Philippines!

So unlike our buddy Judge Floro, he stays.

I still think Judge Floro was unjustly treated.

Beautiful thing about freedom of speech is that it allows all the ignorant to reveal themselves.

Right. Not really as big a story as they make it out to be if it is what I think it is.
He’s a Holocaust denier, he’s a white supremacist and he’s set to get the Republican nomination for a major congressional seat in Illinois.

Arthur Jones, a Prairie State anti-Semite who has been unsuccessfully running for office for decades, is poised to get closer than ever to office this year after emerging as the only GOP candidate for a congressional spot representing parts of Chicago and its suburbs.
IOW, this is Illinois' 3rd congressional district, held by an incumbent who will not lose. He inherited the seat from his father who held it since the 80s (how's that for dynastic politics). He won the previous election with about 65% of the vote.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Lipinski
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Lipinski
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois% ... l_district

Which is why no serious career politician would run for this seat as a Republican.

Big or small, I'm still astonished that a (* cough *) serious party doesn't mind being associated with this type of crackpot.

As we're on the subject:
Vice wrote:This new mapping tool shows where neo-Nazi trolls live in the U.S.

A new interactive tool created by activists is attempting to track the physical location of trolls affiliated with the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, a step-up in the simmering online war between anti-fascists and the so-called “alt right.”

Announced on Jan. 28, the existence of “Fashmaps” has been slowly percolating through social media. It was created by a systems analyst using the alias “Simon,” who came up with the idea when he was trawling far-right message boards looking for neo-Nazis in his area that he could “doxx,” a tactic used by anti-fascists (aka antifa) to expose far-right actors’ true identities.

Of course they can only be trolls…

It might stem from a misunderstanding of how political parties in USA work.

Oh, I readily admit that it's not so much a misunderstanding as a lack of understanding. (Feel free to enlighten me.)

That being said, I learned a lot with you guys these last years: reading the European press I now start to see the approximations, clichés and, yes, misunderstandings when they report about the USA.

Still way to go…

Well the party probably does mind, it's just that the nomination process doesn't really have a mechanism for the party to exclude crackpots like this from running. So if a holocaust denier wants to run, and nobody else runs to oppose them, then you might have a situation like this one.

Weird. Does that mean that, given these special conditions, any dude (or dudette) can declare "I'm the candidate of party X" without being thrown out?

That's a splendid field for trolling!

I think so. There's probably a form that needs to be filled out and a fee to be paid, as well as a list of signatures. By a certain deadline. So it isn't quite so simple. It takes some planning and effort. But if the only person who takes all those steps is a crackpot, they will be the only person whose name appears on the ballot. Voters can still write in the name of a different person if they don't want to vote for the person whose name appears on the ballot, but someone would need to organize a write-in campaign for this to work.

Yes exactly.

The primary system was a "reform" to get away from back room deals.

DNC did keep back room deals for POTUS primary.
