Alabama-based League of the South launches Russian-language page to promote 'Southern nationalism'

The Alabama-based League of the South is launching a Russian-language section of its website designed to attract people interested in "Southern nationalism."

Classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the neo-confederate organization made the announcement in the days after President Trump met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The new page will reflect that the Russian people and Southerners are natural allies, according to a letter from league president Michael Hill posted to the group's website.

"As fellow Whites of northern European extraction, we come from the same general gene pool. As inheritors of the European cultural tradition, we share similar values, customs, and ways of life. And as Christians, we worship the same Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and our common faith binds us as brothers and sisters," Hill wrote.

More precisely they hate Jews as well as being racial segregationists (and LARPers).

As such they may find themselves banned in Russia.

I'll hold your beer while you watch this:

When Pence was governor:
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed a law this year that mandated funerals for fetuses

Pence basically invented the Republican Party's war on Planned Parenthood while he was in Congress. He wants Roe v. Wade to be overturned. He signed every anti-abortion bill that crossed his desk as governor of Indiana.

But Pence signed one anti-abortion bill in March of this year [2016] that was so extreme, even some pro-life Republicans opposed it. And it was eventually blocked from going into effect by a federal judge for violating women’s right to choose.

The law did something truly bizarre. It would have basically forced women to seek funerary services for a fetus — whether she’d had an abortion or a miscarriage, and no matter how far along the pregnancy was.

The law Pence backed would have required all fetal tissue to be cremated or buried, an unprecedented measure in state law. The law also banned abortion if the fetus had a "disability" — which would have denied women the right to end a pregnancy even in case of serious fetal anomalies.

The wording of the burial provision meant that technically, even if a woman had a miscarriage at eight weeks of pregnancy at home, she would have to keep the blood and tissue, take it to a hospital or clinic, and have it buried or cremated by a funeral home. The law would have also dramatically increased the cost of an abortion, since providers would have had to spend time and money on arranging the funerary services.

And since about half of miscarriages happen shortly after a fertilized egg is implanted, and occur at roughly the same time a woman would expect her period, many women could be having a miscarriage and not even know it — and thus, technically be violating the law if they didn’t cremate or bury the resulting tissue.

Mo. GOP Denounces 'Vile' Remarks of Primary Winner

Steve West, known for bigotry and conspiracy theories, won nomination for state House seat

(Newser) – He calls himself Jack Justice, has a YouTube channel in which he puts on a wig and fake beard and spouts conspiracy theories, and said last year on a radio show: "Hitler was right about what was taking place in Germany. And who was behind it." Steve West also just won the GOP primary for a seat in the Missouri House of Representatives by 25 percentage points, besting three other candidates and leaving the state's Republican Party disgusted and a regional director for the Anti-Defamation League scratching her head as to how West "flew under the radar." "I'm not sure I have a great answer," Karen Aroesty tells the Kansas City Star about West, who won the 15th District nomination in Clay County for his party. Splinter News reports he has also aired anti-vaccine diatribes and conspiracy theories about liberals molesting children on the radio.

NYC School Chancellor Says 15 Yeshivas Didn’t Give Investigators Access

Fifteen ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools haven’t let New York City officials investigate allegations that they don’t provide enough secular education, according to a letter Wednesday from the city schools chief.

Chancellor Richard Carranza sent a 14-page letter to New York’s state education commissioner expressing “serious concern” about this lack of access, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. He cited repeated attempts over the last two years to schedule visits.

An attorney for the yeshivas in question denied the city’s claim, according to the Journal.

The chancellor wrote that the yeshivas said on Wednesday that eight of the 15 were willing to schedule visits. Young Advocates for Fair Education, a group of 52 yeshiva parents, former students and others, first complained in July 2015.

The group claimed that at 39 yeshivas, students were taught basic English and math from about age 7 to 13, for about 90 minutes a day, the Journal reported. Other secular subjects were largely skipped to make room for religious studies.

By state law, private K-12 schools must provide an education “substantially equivalent” to that in public schools, according to the Journal.

Most GOP candidates for top Arizona schools post support teaching creationism

Four out of the five Republican candidates running for state superintendent of public instruction said they believe Arizona students should be taught creationism and intelligent design as part of science learning requirements.

The candidates' comments came during Wednesday night's debate [Aug. 1st] hosted by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com.

Jonathan Gelbart was the sole Republican candidate who opposed teaching students creationism and intelligent design. He is joined by Democrats Kathy Hoffman and David Schapira.

The four others — Bob Branch, Frank Riggs, Tracy Livingston and incumbent Diane Douglas — each said they believed students should be taught those topics in some capacity.
