http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/30/busin ... price.html
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first drug to treat patients with spinal muscular atrophy, a savage disease that, in its most severe form, kills infants before they turn 2.

...

The drug, called Spinraza, will not come cheap — and, by some estimates, will be among the most expensive drugs in the world.

Biogen, which is licensing Spinraza from Ionis Pharmaceuticals, said this week that one dose will have a list price of $125,000. That means the drug will cost $625,000 to $750,000 to cover the five or six doses needed in the first year, and about $375,000 annually after that, to cover the necessary three doses a year. Patients will presumably take Spinraza for the rest of their lives.
Families caring for afflicted children are already financially strapped, so they will have to resort to fundraisers, charity, and other means.

This is the quote of the year:
“We believe the Spinraza pricing decision is likely to invite a storm of criticism, up to and including presidential tweets,” Geoffrey C. Porges, an analyst for Leerink Partners, said in a note to investors on Thursday.
Presidential Tweets? Horrors!
Mr. Porges said the price could lead some insurers to balk or to limit the drug to patients who are the most severely affected, such as infants, even though the F.D.A. has approved Spinraza for all patients with the condition.

“What you will have is a standoff with payers,” he said in an interview on Thursday. “How is this all going to play out?”

The price of the drug would be comparable to some other drugs that treat rare diseases. A spokeswoman for Biogen said the company set the price after considering several factors, including the cost to the health care system and the clinical value it brought to patients. She said that the company has also consulted insurers about covering the drug, and that while the talks are in their early stages, insurers have responded positively to the drug’s effectiveness.

“We are working to help ensure no patient will forgo treatment because of financial limitations or insurance status,” said the spokeswoman, Ligia Del Bianco.
Well, they aren't in business to lose money.

Reality. Even when it doesn't suck, it sucks.

Would it not be Nice to know what the actual cost is to synthesize the drug?

Texas teacher who had sex almost daily with 13-year-old student could face decades in prison

A Texas middle school teacher who was impregnated by a 13-year-old student could face up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Alexandria Vera, who was arrested in June, told police that she fell in love with one of her students after the two began a relationship through Instagram messages. The 24-year-old former eighth-grade English teacher at Stovall Middle School in Houston also said that the boy’s family was supportive of the affair.

Vera, who pleaded guilty on Wednesday, was initially charged with continuous sexual assault of a child, which carries a maximum punishment of life in prison. By pleading guilty to a lesser charge, her sentence was capped at 30 years, according to the Houston Chronicle.

She also is eligible for deferred adjudication, in which case she will be placed on probation and will have no felony on her record if she successfully completes the terms, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The now-14-year-old boy, who also admitted to the sexual relationship, is in foster care and will remain there at least until August, according to KHOU. The boy’s mother also was investigated by Child Protective Services, according to media reports.

Ex-mayor charged in 4-year-old’s rape said girl was a willing participant, records say

A former Ohio mayor indicted on rape charges reportedly confessed that he had sex with a child — a young girl, who, the man claimed, was a willing participant.

Court records filed Monday describe conversations in which Richard Keenan — who briefly served as the mayor of Hubbard — talked to several people, including his wife and a pastor, about alleged assaults that occurred over the course of two years, beginning in 2013, when the girl was 4.

The 65-year-old Keenan, who once described himself as a man of faith, was indicted last month on eight counts of gross sexual imposition, eight counts of rape and four counts of attempted rape.

["Snip!"--Ed.]

At the time, Keenan said he had dedicated his life to Christ — a decision that he said changed his life.

Don’t preach it, but live it,” he told the paper.

Read about that one earlier. Apparently the boy's parents knew all about it too, and were OK with it. Not that that excuses it.

Not to defend this pricing, because I really don't know whether it is justified, but there's a lot of other costs that go into it, mostly for the initial research and testing, besides the cost to synthesize it. And if the number of patients is small, they have to make a lot per patient to make back their investment.

I understand that, I really do, but I remain skeptical in this case. They make up a lot of profit with more popular and necessary drugs.

A 20-year-old New Jersey woman is undergoing a mental evaluation after police officers claim they randomly watched her push a 5-year-old girl in front of an oncoming train on Friday night, PEOPLE confirms.

Autumn Matacchiera was taken into custody immediately after the incident and faces a charge of attempted murder, according to Capt. John Fine of the Burlington, New Jersey, police department.

Odd phrasing. Should it be, 'the watched her randomly push' or better yet remove the word randomly entirely.
“The stigma has to stop. Even in the system, there is stigma going on,” Autumn wrote. “Ensuring they get the right help early on can help reduce the revolving-door effect that happens when children do not get [the] quality of services they deserve.”

Horrifying story.

I tend to believe that she is probably genuinely mentally ill and may not have been in control of her own behavior at the time. Why that is, I don't know. Some people's brains just don't work right. She may have had a psychotic episode.

I do not doubt that.

The child only suffered scrapes, but revealing that would have been Nice.

Former MIT professor accused of scheme to get properties from his children

The former MIT professor who filed a false police report after staging his own shooting has spent more than a decade trying to defraud his own children and state record keepers by doctoring legal documents, an arbitrator overseeing the family’s litigation has stated in a scathing decision.

John Donovan Sr. of Hamilton, who in 2007 was convicted of coordinating a ruse in which he shot himself in the stomach and accused his oldest son of attempting to murder him, was accused by arbitrator John S. Martin Jr. of a “blatant attempt” to defraud the estate of his youngest son, John Donovan Jr., who died in 2015.

The blistering 86-page decision was a response to a series of documents that the elder Donovan filed in the Essex Registry of Deeds in which he claimed rights to various properties. However, Donovan had given up his rights to the properties long ago through legally binding agreements, according to Martin’s decision.

Donovan tried to control the properties by creating an add-on to his son’s will and arguing that he had a special power of attorney, according to the decision. Martin cited witnesses who testified that the elder Donovan’s documents were fake and that his late son did not want “to benefit Professor Donovan,” the decision states.

The only references to Professor Donovan in John, Jr.’s estate planning documents concern John, Jr.’s wishes that Professor Donovan have no contact whatsoever with John, Jr.’s children, and that he not attend John, Jr.’s funeral,” wrote Martin, a former federal judge.

["Snip!"--Ed.]

Essex Register of Deeds John L. O’Brien Jr. told the Herald that he hopes Donovan is “being held accountable for what he has done.” "Hopes?"

["Snip!"--Ed.]

The arbitrator’s decision was submitted to a Superior Court judge yesterday for enforcement. If the judge agrees, Donovan would be barred from filing any more fraudulent documents What about FREEDOMS OF SPEECH! Can you get a court's permission to file fraudulent documents? and would have to pay his children hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees and expenses. There is that.

Attorneys for Donovan’s children either declined to comment or did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
