UK court rejects Turkish extradition request for media boss

Judge refuses case against Hamdi Akin İpek on grounds it was ‘politically motivated’

A judge has dismissed as “politically motivated” an extradition request by the Turkish government for a dispossessed media proprietor to be sent for trial in Ankara.

Judge John Zani also refused the application on the grounds that extraditing Hamdi Akin İpek and three other Turkish nationals would put them at risk of serious mistreatment.

İpek, whose newspapers and TV stations have been confiscated by Turkish officials for criticising the regime of the president, Recep Tayip Erdoğan, appeared alongside the other men at Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday.

Delivering his ruling, Zani said he was “satisfied that this is a politically motivated prosecution”. If they were returned to Turkey, he added, there would be a real risk of breaches of Article III of the European Convention of Human Rights, which states no one should be subjected to torture, degrading treatment and punishment.
[…]
The ruling is the latest in a series of refusals by British courts to extradite suspects to Turkey, where thousands of journalists, lawyers and civil servants remain in prison following the failed 2016 coup.

Although Turkey is a fellow member of the Council of Europe and Nato, there has been criticism of the UK government for formally certifying the Turkish government extradition given the country’s recent human rights record under Erdoğan.

In more strange UK news, the plague of moped muggers has led to the police allowing police cars to chase the moped drivers (and even nudge them off the road).

However, UK law apparently makes the police drivers legally responsible for any injuries suffered by the mopeders. So, as soon as any of them sue, the MET may have to bend over and pay compensation and send an officer to jail for dangerous driving.

GP convicted of running illegal transgender clinic for children

A GP has been convicted of running an illegal transgender clinic, providing hormones to children as young as 12 despite being refused a licence by the NHS regulator.

Dr Helen Webberley, 49, ran the clinic from her home, treating children who wanted to change sex, charging between £75 and £150 an hour.

She also provided online advice, calling herself the Gender GP, prescribing children and teenagers who had been denied treatment on the NHS.

Webberley’s clinic was last year refused a license to operate by watchdog Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates Court heard.

But her firm continued to operate between March 2017 and February 2018.

Webberley, from Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, insisted she was innocent and warned that closing down her service meant that patients could come to harm.

The UK police harassment of Jonaya continues, now they have bashed down her parents' door and searched their house without a warrant. Her crime, of course, is being skeptical of Muslims.

Parents 'must not abdicate duties' to teachers, says Ofsted

Parents should not expect schools to police children's eating and exercise, or toilet train pupils, Ofsted boss Amanda Spielman will say this week.

England's chief inspector for schools will argue the answer to the obesity crisis lies in the home, and parents should not "abdicate responsibility".

Neither can schools be a "panacea" for knife crime or child neglect, she will add in her second annual report.

Two studies have this year queried the benefit of school anti-obesity schemes.

In February, the British Medical Journal reported that a year-long anti-obesity programme involving more than 600 West Midlands primary school pupils yielded no improvements.

And in July an Ofsted study of 60 schools found no link between efforts to tackle obesity and pupils' weight.

Ms Spielman, who will present Ofsted's annual report on Tuesday, will highlight concerns that - by the time they start primary school - almost a quarter of children in England are overweight or obese.

This rises to over a third by the time they move on to secondary school.

Farage stood down as leader soon after the Brexit referendum. He claimed various reasons but the party had (people thought then) achieved its main reason for existing, and was in decline anyway.

Since then, the party has had a succession of increasingly loony, borderline openly racist, leaders and is now widely regarded as a spent force in its death throes.

If Brexit is thwarted, as now looks likely, there will be a big opportunity for a nationalist party to gain votes and maybe even power. Farage has calculated that this will need to be a new party not tainted by the reputation UKIP has gained over the last couple of years, and he's positioning himself ready to be a founder member of this new party if and when the chance arises.

Even though UKIP was often accused of being racist when Farage was the boss, one must give him some credit for never allowing it to be openly racist - and he always used to sack any UKIP candidates or spokespersons who were caught making racist comments.

Between 2010 and 2015 UKIP suspended at least 19 councillors, 14 parliamentary candidates, a national secretary, its youth leader, one spokesperson, its Scotland chair, an entire local branch, three MEPs and a local committee. Not all the sackings were for racism, but I think a majority of them were.

Since 2015 there have been many other sackings, including leader Henry Bolton and Welsh leader Neil Hamilton. The leaders weren't sacked for racism, as far as I know. Bolton's girlfriend sent racist tweets however, and that was one of the many reasons why he was sacked.

Interesting.

Not just presumed racist because they wanted lower taxes or were "tough" on crime or something.
Real-o true-lo racists, not "institutional" racists.

The party itself wasn't racist, and I don't think Farage himself is (though he is clearly anti-immigrant which some people think is the same). The problem was that the party attracted a lot of people to join who were closet racists. Anyone wanting to become a representative of the party would have been required to pledge that they wouldn't espouse racism, and whenever those people were subsequently caught making racist remarks, Farage rightly disciplined them and/or expelled them.

Here's a leftist website listing some of the more egregious examples. https://leftfootforward.org/2015/02/is- ... uggest-so/
