2017 was the best year ever

Postby Rob Lister » Mon Jan 08, 2018 2:51 pm

Columnist Nicholas Kristof looks back on the state of the world in the year that just ended and arrives at a conclusion likely to surprise many: "2017 was probably the very best year in the long history of humanity," he writes in the New York Times. It's all about perspective, Kristof explains. Yes, American politics are a "circus," North Korea poses a scary threat, and wars and related atrocities continue to plague Syria, Yemen, Myanmar, and elsewhere. But it's important to look past the drumbeat of bad news and not lose sight of bigger-picture advancements, including: "A smaller share of the world’s people were hungry, impoverished or illiterate than at any time before. A smaller proportion of children died than ever before."

Kristof is talking about "transformational" changes taking place over years, even decades, that get lost in daily headlines, including advances in health care in third-world nations and the increasing availability of clean water and electricity. Kristof writes that he isn't blind to the very real threats the world is facing, but he suggests looking at this way: "The world is registering important progress, but it also faces mortal threats. The first belief should empower us to act on the second." Click for the full column, in which Kristof promises to return to tearing his hair out and expressing outrage at the world's troubles for the rest of the year. "But today, let's not miss what's going right."

Idiot. Him and you.
"It is not I who is mad! It is I who is crazy!" -- Ren Hoek

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

Cheer up. You had a good life. The best life ever, probably. If it rains tomorrow take comfort in yesterday. Fag.

Kristof:
Every day, the number of people around the world living in extreme poverty (less than about $2 a day) goes down by 217,000, according to calculations by Max Roser, an Oxford University economist who runs a website called Our World in Data. Every day, 325,000 more people gain access to electricity. And 300,000 more gain access to clean drinking water.

Interesting. You can read the paper and see charts here:
https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty/

217,000 per day is about 79 million per year, or roughly 1% of the world's population.

According to these household surveys, 44% of the world population lived in absolute poverty in 1981. Since then, the share of poor people in the world has declined very fast—in fact, faster than ever before in world history. In 32 years, the share of people living in extreme poverty was divided by 4, reaching levels below 11% in 2013. Although the World Bank estimates for 2015 are not yet available, the projections suggest that the incidence of extreme poverty has fallen below 10% for that year.

10% of 7 billion is about 700 million, so at that rate "extreme poverty" could be (practically speaking) ended within a decade from now.
Of course, that assumes that current trends continue.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.
William Shakespeare

That was low. Actually I quite agree with your original quote: long term betterment, short term noise. Let's just hope the climate won't skew that betterment trend towards unpleasantness. (I'll be dust by then, so…)

US life expectancy also fell in 2017. It may be good for the rest of the world, but as much as I hate to admit it the US isn't the only thing in the world.

But only for the heroin addicts. Watching a show on netflix about drugs from the cops and dealers perspective it seems all the dealers cut their heroin with fentanyl now; it is a very cheap way to increase the potency after stepping on it repeatedly. They "guess" as to how much they should use and then 'survey' their clients to see if they're still alive.

Other than that, heart disease and cancer are going down slightly.

What? Do you want to live forever?

Maybe for everyone else.

Usually, around mid December, I would have been joking that 2018 sucks already but this year I honestly couldn't because the only way that 2018 could be any worse for me than 2017 was would be for me to literally end up sleeping under an overpass or for me to be diagnosed with some form of cancer that is going to kill me slowly and painfully or some other highly unlikely but terrible event. So 2018 almost can't help but be a little better than 2017 was.

So everyone else got to have a good year. Yay for them, I guess. for me, 2017 was literally the worst year of my life and I am not saying that out of my usual pessmism. It objectively was. And I am glad to see it gone.
