### Re: The Mega Million Winner

I don't know if they really need to publicize the person though. Hard to explain whatI mean, but I'll try.

Some of the casinos around here like to publicize it when some schmuck hits a few hundred bucks playing slot machines, their sign will show something like "Joe Blow $500 Jackpot Winner!" for a few days after. Even in a two horse town like Carson City, it's very unlikely that Joe Blow is someone I will know and that the name will mean anything to me. Could be anyone's name, that isn't what they want me to take away from the sign. What they want me to take away from the sign is that someone won money at their casino, in the hopes that I will be innumerate enough to think that makes me more likely to win there and therefore give them my money. It's the same principle with this lottery winner, just with more money involved. It doesn't matter WHO won the money, for publicity purposes, only THAT they won it. Also,$560 million = \$264 million after taxes. The government wins twice!

I always love the "THE GOvERNmentz GoonnA Take HALF" complaints.

Fine.

Give me the other half if you do not want it.

Part of the problem is the brother of a Senate President won . . . twice. So there is this whole fear the lotteries are "rigged" whether or not any actual evidence--beyond Whitey Bulger--exists of such. However, I do not agree with the states that demand the publication of such. All you are doing is placing a huge ass target on a citizen.

Welcome to infamy. Seems to me that part of the game. Not that I much care.

As to the taxes: sometimes, when the jackpot gets high enough, it seems like the odds of buying a ticket are worth it. But after taxes it almost never is. Almost. I've heard of schemes where profit happens. Not gonna look though.

Even in such schemes, there's gotta be better ways of making money.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

### Re: The Mega Million Winner

Once I was a programmer on contract where the client was the New York State Lottery. It was business IT stuff, nothing to do with running the lottery itself.

Nevertheless, part of the (short term) contract was that we would not play the lottery for 5 years.
