What a Train Wreck

At least two people are dead and 50 more injured after an Amtrak train collided with a CSX freight train early Sunday in South Carolina, reports CNN, derailing the Amtrak lead engine and some of its passenger cars. The accident, which involved Amtrak's New York-to-Miami Train 91, occurred about 2:30am in Cayce, SC, south of Columbia. Amtrak said it had 139 passengers and eight crew aboard.

No word on why but it looks like the Amtrak was being diverted to a side track when it happened.

You'd think they'd use some kind of technology to avoid these mishaps. Computers or something might be involved.

Fucking Amtrak again. Yeah, there should be a technology to prevent these, and there is. It's called Positive Train Control, and every time something like this happens it gets brought up. It was mandated back in 2008 but then Congress kept granting extensions.

I was supposed to be in place by the end of 2015, but congress simply mandated it without providing enough funds to actually do it. In 2015 they granted a deadline extension until the end of 2018.

In October 2015 Congress passed a bill extending the compliance deadline by three years, to December 31, 2018. President Barack Obama signed the bill on October 29, 2015.[16]
Thanks Obama!

NTSB: Train safety feature could have prevented S.C. train collision
The head of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Sunday that the correct implementation of a key train safety feature could have prevented the early morning Amtrak crash in South Carolina.

Chairman Robert Sumwalt said at a press conference that the implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC), which automatically decreases the speed of a train traveling over the limit, could have prevented the collision that left two people dead and dozens of others injured.

Railroads have until the end of 2018 to enact the costly safety feature, which lawmakers typically push for following deadly crashes. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who sits on the Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, advocated on Sunday for the implementation of PTC following reports of the crash.

"America’s railroads must be made safer. Proven technology like Positive Train Control cannot continue to be delayed," Blumenthal wrote on Twitter. "On safety, business as usual must end."

I think the system is falling apart due to poor maintenance.
