Toys 'R' Us plans to close all U.S. stores

Postby Rob Lister » Thu Mar 15, 2018 12:21 pm

Bankrupt Toys ‘R’ Us Inc is preparing to sell or close all 885 stores in its U.S. chain, risking up to 33,000 jobs, after failing to reach a deal to restructure billions of dollars in debt, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

In a nutshell, it's worth more in pieces, though I don't know why. At any rate, China will be devastated.

Amazon killed them basically. Or maybe not. But they certainly didn't help. Also they were bought out by private equity a few years ago and they loaded the company up with debt.

Not. In fact had a successful online presence early on.

It's about time! I hate toys!
"It is not I who is mad! It is I who is crazy!" -- Ren Hoek

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

Someone was blaming Bain Capital for loading Toys R Us with toxic dept.
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

The private equity takeover was part of it. As you say, they did load up the company with a lot of debt when they took it over (and paid themselves various "consulting fees" and such at the time).

At the same time though, it was an unfortunate timing to take over the company because lots of "brick and mortar" retailers are having a rough time of it these days. Sears is in its death throes, and a bunch of other retail companies have either gone out of business or are on the verge of doing so. So I think it's a combination of the debt plus Amazon taking a larger and larger share of market away from them every year, which makes making payments on the large debt all but impossible.

And Amazon to pick up the pieces!

Amazon Has Considered Buying Some Toys ‘R’ Us Stores

Pretty smart. Prime real estate with shelves.

It isn't as ironic as Peter Thiel buying up Gawker, but its still funny.
