What a train wreck

Post by Pyrrho » Sat Jun 23, 2018 2:34 pm

Crude oil pours into river from derailed train in US

Around 30 train cars came off the tracks, which are thought to have been weakened by recent flooding in Iowa state.
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

And yet, tank cars do split open when properly provoked. Just like pipelines. :De_Bunk:

Of course both pipelines and trains can and do have spills.

But I think the key metric would be, amount spilled as a percentage of the total amount transported times miles. Is there any comparable data on that?

Short answer: It's not entirely clear which is more risky. You would think they could make pipelines so they are less likely to spill, but that would probably raise the cost too. And everyone wants to save a buck because that's their profit margin.

Yea, out of 3 linky's, I couldn't find a definitive answer to the question you posed. Pipelines don't spill often, but when they do it's a lot more material. Other methods of transport spill more often, but not as much material. Didn't see anything on frequency x amount per each method.

What about spoon?

What is the rate of spillage when using a spoon?
