Janesville?

Is there a big statue to The Hero of Canton over there?

I'm back.

Nice parks, especially the Rotary Botanic Garden (funded by the club of that ilk).
As for railfanning, a fairly good non-trespassing view of a marshaling yard with moderate freight movement.

One of the things I took a vacation from was news and media.

Find some nice classical music for the car on public radio (out of Madison WI), turn off when the voices get annoying.
I figured if it's something really important (like Chicago being hit by a nuke) I'd find out about it soon enough.

So I won't be up on the latest outrages for a few hours.

A certain John Clayton (an English Lord who left all that behind) founded the town.
But instead of following the usual American frontier custom and naming the place "Claytonville", he named it after his wife.

I recall calling on Oscar Meyer in Madison. You could tell what they were making on any given day by the aroma that descended on the town.

Fun times.

Sounds like fun.

Just curious, you seem to have a penchant for going to obscure small towns for your vacations. Do you pick them at random? Is there some sort of pattern?

I only ask because no place you have ever mentioned visiting is a place I have ever thought "That might be a good spot for a vacation". Janesville, I had never even heard of.

A decently prosperous old downtown, cheap tourist motels, places to walk alone and railroad tracks (Google Maps helps there).

Within a day's drive from Chicago.

Of course there is also the piquant exotic character of it being a small town, but that's not for everyone. By which I mean apparently if you grew up in one. :BigGrin3:

Just an aside to those who might be snide about the lack of "diversity" of such places.

Those statistics do not include other tourists. :lmao:

I don't know if small towns are "not diverse", at least not anymore

I recently went back to to my home town (Yerington, NV. Population 3000), for a niece's graduation. I saw more non-white faces than white ones, frankly. At least half the graduates had Hispanic names (which around here could make them either Mexican or Native, possibly both). Yerington was White as Fuck when I was a kid. Shitkicker central. So my hometown might be an exception, but even small towns are prone to demographic change.

No, when I had my own company.

It went GF engulfed and devoured (apt, that) by Kraft ---> OM ----> Miller Brewing ----> Entenmens

We basically followed their acquisitions.
