A chicago memory

Post by ed » Tue Jul 17, 2018 3:37 pm

Just thought of this

I was coming back to the Hyatt Regency, the one off the River, after a dinner or something. It was cold and snowy. I walked into the lobby. It is a big place, open and all. Not a lot of people around. There was a classical trio, chick and two guys. I was morose for some reason. I went up to them and asked them to play the canon in d. I listened to it all alone. All alone in that big space. It made me feel better.

Back during the 96 Olympics there was a string quartet playing in the MARTA train station. I asked for the same piece. They seemed to be pleased that someone noted their existance.

And yes I was late for work.

That has got to be one of the most useless versions of Cannon In D that I've ever come across. :)
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

I liked it. There's a lot of musical creativity that went into that version.

But then I also like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZgiNnGB8m4

Now if you really want to hear wild and crazy, try this classic Beethoven played by a 17-year-old guitarist:

I have never been to Chicago aside from layovers at O'Hare when I fly various places.

However, there is still one thing that blows my mind about the city even at that. The sheer size. If I take off from the Reno airport, I can look out the runway and see city over there, and desert over there. If I take off from San Francisco, I can look out and see city over there, and it isn't too far before I see farmland. But Chicago, nothing but city and Lake Michigan...for a while. Maybe its a result of having been born and raised in the middle of nowhere then moving to a relatively small community after that, but Chicago is friggin huge. It amazes me.

My favorite version is because of what it means: the ending to the fortunately now available documentary Gizmo:

Speed up to 52:40 for context. It follows a sequence on people trying to fly. That last section involves the results of a fat woman blathering about all sort of psychic powers people have to fly. When she tries doing it it, Me Dad remarked, "It's going to take quite an updraft to get that ass off the ground!"

Then the ending: things are so much simpler with science.

54:30 for some classic double-speak, Bubbee.

The size of the urban sprawl amazes me too, and I lived there for eight years after having escaped from my home town of Detroit.

For one job I had, the morning driving commute was 75 minutes (much of it on I-294) and I never once saw any farmland. I was glad when that contract ended after six excruciating months.

Then I escaped to Tampa. Not as huge. Now I'm somewhere much smaller. I could commute by bicycle.

So, yeah, Chicagoland is huge.

Old memory for Abdul:

Image
Chicago"s debonair beer barons Frankie Lake, left, and Terry Druggan, right, circa 1925. The two men were beer manufacturers and distributors who became millionaires during Prohibition. In the early 1920s, Lake and Druggan, who led the Valley Gang, owned several breweries and used their wealth to gain political influence and police protection to avoid jail sentences for beer running and tax evasion. The Tribune described the duo in 1924 as "inseparable and dapper as ever." Both men were on the Chicago Crime Commission"s Public Enemies list in the 1930s, despite their insistence that they were legitimate businessmen who only sold Near-O, or "near beer" (alcohol-free beer).

[ditched rock for flashmob, as per xouper justified complaint]

I'd say that canon has to be played with some bite; alas, most classical versions are quite soft (in the knees). :|

The real product was a prohibition concoction otherwise known as "needle beer".

Legitimately brewed near beer + industrial alcohol.

As some wine merchants in, e. g., Burgundy also deal in cheap but strong wines, say from Sicily. Just by being stored in the same warehouses, the Sicilian virtue can magically improve a weak, but pricey, vintage of burgundy.
