A puzzle for ed

Any idea what this is for?

Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Cool.
That handle says Victorian so it is probably some arcane place setting piece. I've seen odd shit for removing snails and for other very very specific uses.

Could this have something to do with marrow? Or brains?

WTF did you find that?

A friend on Facebook was asking. I thought maybe it's for pomegranates.

Ivory?

Cellulose. Ivory does not hold up to washing and the like.

I'll see if I can find the set I bought my wife. We never used it, our entertaining sorta fell off and we became hermits.

And such guests as you do still entertain don't go in for using utensils anyway.

Best suggestion yet is that it's for hard-boiled eggs.

Actually, soft boiled.

ETA. No, no eggs of any kind. The thing would inject bits of shell.

Sawing open some kind of small fruit with a hard rind and then eating it out of the rind with the spoon, maybe?

Definitely UK. or possibly USA?

Just a bad idea that didn't catch on because it's silly. We already have spoons and knives.

Someone said, "I know, I'll make one utensil that can replace two. But as a knife it is inferior to a dedicated knife, and as a spoon, it has more potential for causing an accident than just a plain old spoon.

And so it never really caught on. Sort of like a spork, but sporks did catch on, although most people prefer either a fork or a spoon, depending on the food. A spork is never the ideal utensil. It's only an acceptable alternative for a wider range of foods.
