Serious stereo question

Post by ed » Fri Aug 31, 2018 11:07 am

Back in the day, when I gave a shit, I had a home theater set up. A couple of years ago the amp died and Cool Hand recommend and found this Marantz thing for me. Now I want simplification. Want to dump the Marantz and speakers and wires and stupid sub-woofer and just watch the damn TV like a good christian.

The speakers in the TV suck and I bought a cheap powered speaker that I saw in an ad (oh, the irony). It is tinny but does make the audio clearer.

Now, what is the best way to go to produce audio that is decent, not high end quality, but decent.

No wires is a plus.

Rob would know.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Since you are describing a spectrum from Shit to Good, you must listen to a lot of them until you find what suits your aging ears ed. :)

Due to my career path in life, I'd likely ... guide ... you to something that would be overkill for you. I'm a wav file snob and a purist when it comes to all else. IMHO, (wireless) Bluetooth isn't ready to transmit music without mangling it, so for me, wires are a must. And if you're anything like me when it comes to this, all I can add is that professional power amplifiers are pretty easy to make these days. I run Hafler P3000s (no longer available). Loudspeakers are a bit harder to make well. I've got several pairs of JBL 4412As, looks like those are no longer available either. The closest currently available model would be the 6332. Those go for about 3 large per stereo pair.

Make sure the wireless uses gold cables.

And don't forget low oxygen copper! Otherwise, it will become despondent, lose it's job, end up living under a bridge and then turn to a lovely shade of green.

I agree with the sound bar idea. The only thing that annoys me is the thought that they now put crap speakers into TVs so that you have to buy one.

If they're crunching the numbers, something will get lost. I doubt I can hear the difference, but ... it bugs me man! :)
