Actress wants to ban airbrushing

Post by Anaxagoras » Mon Dec 03, 2018 3:55 am

I think she means specifically in advertisements. I guess you could add photoshop to that list.

Viewpoint: Jameela Jamil on why airbrushing should be illegal
I would like to put airbrushing in the bin. I want it gone. I want it out of here.

I think it's a disgusting tool that has been weaponised, predominantly against women, and is responsible for so many more problems than we realise because we are blinded by the media, our culture and our society.

I suffered from eating disorders as a teenager and so I know how damaging 'perfect' images in magazines can be.
Image

Okay. Just curious though, why do you wear makeup? Are you trying to make yourself appear more attractive than you really are? Have you considered that your beauty efforts may make other women and girls suffer from low self-esteem? :notsure:
Here are the reasons why I want to have it banned:
It's a lie to the consumer

If you buy the products airbrushing is used to advertise, you won't look like the person in the photograph.

It's used to smooth lines, hide blemishes, lighten skin, slim features, lengthen limbs, and brighten eyes and teeth.

It exists to sell a fantasy to the consumer that this 'perfection' is indeed possible. If you have yet to achieve this beauty standard, it tells you, you should buy some expensive products immediately, because then you will look like the person in the photo. (But, as I said just a moment ago, you won't.)

How is this ethical or even legal?
Still, I understand what she's saying. While we're at it, can we force McDonalds and Burger King to use real burgers that you actually get at a drive-thru in their ads? :|

https://www.boredpanda.com/fast-food-ads-vs-reality/ Many comparisons of advetisement images vs. actual products purchased.

(This is actually one of the better examples for burgers.)

I guess a person who believes that buying a makeup product will make them look like the model in the magazine, would expect their burger at McDonalds to look like the one in the ad.

I found a picture of her without makeup:

My girlfriend works for a company that produces catalogs/advertisements and does their own photo shoots, including for food. They employ food stylists who make sure that everything is absolutely perfect for the food in the ad or catalog, the studio has a full kitchen.

The best part is when she takes home the food afterwards, I got an enormous maine lobster one day that was used for a lobstergram photo shoot. Biggest lobster I ever had! Damn thing must have been 5 lbs...

Bottom line, the food in the pictures is real it's just made by a professional and not some high school kid making minimum wage. She told me that during a popcorn shoot the food stylist went through every single piece of popcorn, selecting only the biggest and best ones for the photo and rejecting the others. Literally sorted through thousands of them... these people make big money too!

I don't think it's legal to claim one food is another for commercial purposes. Maybe they do that for films and plays but not in advertising. Lights used by photographers aren't particularly hot, it's not like there's dozens of them like in a TV studio.

I'm unsure as to whether this is pedantic or woosh. Pedwoosh?

WTF? Did you get up on the wrong side of bed and feel the need to pee in someone’s cornflakes?

Ice ream shoots are done in small studios at below freezing temps.

This is true because I typed it out on the internet.

I just noticed that Jack in the Box puts American cheese on tacos? WTF?

There hasn't been a Jack in the Box restaurant around here in decades, I vaguely remember going there once just before I got my tonsils out in the first grade. It was across the street from Little Company of Mary hospital. I remember the hamburgers had a weird sauce on them.

Another example where teaching critical thinking would be better than laws banning photoshop.

Indeed. I read that photographers working for mail order catalogs are the best paid in the profession.

It's interesting to see how these catalogs run through a very conventional woman's life: some lingerie for seduction, wedding apparel, then kid's fashion, cooking utensils, decorative home trinkets, and finally comfy clothes (with printed flower designs!) and special furniture for the elderly; all nicely laid out in that order.
So there's more to it than just some 'shopping.

As a personal anecdote, walking with one of my (now deceased) friends, a very literary non-techie guy, we came across a commercial poster of some chicks in bikinis with astounding ass cheeks. I diagnosed either lifting surgery or, more probably, Photoshop. Well, he didn't want to believe me.

Why do you have to destroy people's dreams? :x
