Can cold air really choke someone to death?

Post by LadyGaia95 » Sat Jan 25, 2014 5:03 pm

News article saying that inhaling very cold (below 0 degrees Fahrenheit) air causes extreme swelling of the thymus and subsequent asphyxiation:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2 ... 10,1795860

A sudden, shocking fright can also cause a rapid and fatal expansion of the thymus: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1 ... 54,2319858

What do you think?

I've had many days of below zero degree weather this month here in NW Ohio.

This type of weather is very unusual for the MidWest.

But I digress.

NEVER, not even once, has inhaling below zero degrees caused me any problems.

Idiot.

Idiot.
Degrees F or Celcius? And, for how long? It also depends if you covered your airways to prevent the cold getting in.

The article mentioned it was -2 degrees F and the victim went to his barn to do chores.

Two weeks ago here it was MINUS 15 degrees F during the DAY.

For several days in a row.

I didn't cover my nose, face, or mouth.

And yet here I am responding to your ridiculous post.

Oh, and for the last 5 days it's been below zero degrees F at night, and I survived going outside then, too.

Again duration of exposure is a big factor in cold-induced adverse effects.

Duration of exposure does make a difference.

But you didn't address that in your first post.

Therefore, why I answered the way that I did.

Fun fact. The mucus membrane around your larynyx can freeze in extreme cold. The growing ball of ice in your throat can suffocate you.

Of course, unless you are climbing Everest it doesn't really happen.

Which is why, of course, never use sudaphed or other substances that dry out the mucous membranes because they could then develop dry ice which is much worse. . . .

Then the question would be: can someone be allergic to dry ice?
