Why the Ultimate Warrior Died (or how sports drugs work)

Postby corplinx » Tue Apr 15, 2014 2:17 am

Age 54. Looks to be in good shape. Dies of a massive heart attack. Uncommon in most of life. Common for pro-wrestlers.

Why?

"STEROIDS!!!!!!!!"

No.

Steroids are the generic slang for artificial testosterone. Body builders, athletes, pro-wrestlers, and jersey shore douchebags take this to make their body grow muscle faster. At a low enough dosage or with simply letting it cycle out of your system, it is basically undetectable. Your body makes Test. Additional Test cycles out of your system with 2 weeks of being injected.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy has become common for men over 35 as their natural production tapers off. Self-supplementation though has a stigma. As with any substance, it can be taken in moderation (TRT) or abused (Hulk Hogan in 1984).

But enough is never enough in competitive physical activities.

How do you ramp your metabolism up to burn more fat while you are trying to add mass? More muscle, less fat! And have longer workouts at the gym? Or have energy for 9 whole innings?

Clen/Tren

Clenbuterol and Trenbolone. Controlled substances. Cycle either of these, and it is like taking super-ephedra. Your heart rate goes up, your body temp goes up, YOU BECOME A GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most of what think is "roid rage" is tweaked out people taking clen/tren/cocaine or just acting out because they think they're supposed to. Taking big doses of this stuff.... and it isn't good for you!!! We took ephedra off the shelf because people were taking too much and wearing out their hearts. Clen/Tren are worse.

They can be cycled out. If someone tried to use them to perform better during a game, that can be detected. Pro-wrestlers want to have that "cut" look though that athletes don't need. They want to be massive vs lean and still be cut. Hence, Clen/Tren abuse.

Abused repeatedly, they will take a toll on your heart. Warrior was an advocate of legal steroid use sadly. He will be used an example of people dying early "because steroids". Steroids can cause your heart rate to increase as a side effect, but nothing like taking Clen/Tren/Ephedra.

Hmmm.

Hadn't heard of either. Will look into them.

It is pretty easy to spot people doing "performance enhancing drugs" at a gym.

People doing clen/tren/other need to drink tons of water. Typically they will drink 2 gallons a day. The guy with the milk jug full of water at the gym who is sweating his ass off? Fits the profile. He may just like to drink water out of a jug and be sweating a lot, but the jug is the yellow flag. If he's eating a banana in the locker room, another yellow flag. They have to eat a lot of potassium too.

Meth makes you crash. It is just speed.

Anti-catabolics like Clen let you burn more idle, go harder at the gym for a longer time, without your body going catabolic. They want to stay anabolic.

Hmm, that reminds me of 2,4-Dinitrophenol. It's a mitochondrial uncoupler, effectively burning fat with little consumption of ATP. As I recall there was a thin line between a therapeutic dosage, and an overdose with potentially fatal effects (it functions as a protonophore. When the electrochemical gradient is in a state of imbalance, energy is consumed to pump these protons out, and it is not recaptured into chemical energy in the form of ATP. Hyperthermia can inevitably result). It was rather popular decades ago, though it can still be obtained, just like any other controlled substance. It was utilized by body-builders and athletes alike, in a bid to burn fat the lazy (and undeniably dangerous) way.

Oddly enough, I am not familiar with those two compounds. Perhaps it explains why so many young, healthy athletes seem to fall victim to SADS?

"Authorities in Phoenix say former pro wrestler The Ultimate Warrior died of cardiovascular disease.

Maricopa County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick says that's the finding from an autopsy conducted Thursday by the county Medical Examiner's Office.

The 54-year-old wrestler's given name was James Hellwig, though he legally changed his name to Warrior in 1993. He collapsed April 8 while walking with his wife to their car at a Scottsdale hotel and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Scottsdale police have said there were no signs of foul play.

The Ultimate Warrior was one of pro wrestling's biggest stars in the late 1980s.

Sports figures we've lost in 2014

A look back at the people in sports who died in 2014
His death came only three days after The Ultimate Warrior was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and just one day after Hellwig made an appearance on WWE's "Raw," his first appearance on the show since 1996.

According to WWE, The Ultimate Warrior was "one of the most iconic WWE Superstars ever," joined the organization in 1987 and three years later was world champion, defeating Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI at SkyDome in Toronto. The match, billed as the "Ultimate Challenge," lived up to the billing in the eyes of most, a common staple in lists of greatest wrestling matches of all time.

Hellwig and WWE had a contentious relationship after he left the company in 1996, battling one another in lawsuits over ownership of The Ultimate Warrior copyright. WWE released a controversial DVD in 2005 titled "The Self-Destruction of The Ultimate Warrior," which featured many wrestlers giving disparaging remarks about Warrior. That DVD led to yet another lawsuit.

His wrestling career over, the man who began his career as a bodybuilder had a brief turn as a motivational speaker.

Along with his enshrinement into the Hall of Fame and return to the ring in "Raw," The Ultimate Warrior character is to be included in the WWE 2K14 video game, another sign of his reconciliation with WWE."
