Fish oil fails

Postby Pyrrho » Sun Apr 27, 2014 2:06 pm

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3914521/

The medical community suffered three significant fish oil failures/setbacks in 2013. Claims that fish oil's EPA/DHA would stop the progression of heart disease were crushed when The Risk and Prevention Study Collaborative Group (Italy) released a conclusive negative finding regarding fish oil for those patients with high risk factors but no previous myocardial infarction. Fish oil failed in all measures of CVD prevention—both primary and secondary. Another major 2013 setback occurred when fish oil's DHA was shown to significantly increase prostate cancer in men, in particular, high-grade prostate cancer, in the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) analysis by Brasky et al. Another monumental failure occurred in 2013 whereby fish oil's EPA/DHA failed to improve macular degeneration. In 2010, fish oil's EPA/DHA failed to help Alzheimer's victims, even those with low DHA levels. These are by no means isolated failures. The promise of fish oil and its so-called active ingredients EPA / DHA fails time and time again in clinical trials.

Interestingly enough, I went over my over-the-counter supplements with my primary physician recently, and fish oil was the only one that he said was OK.

As a vitamin A supplement, not as a cure all for heart attacks, Alzheimer's etc.

Gone are the daily multivitamin and vitamin C supplement ("You eat fruit nearly every day, right?"), along with various odds and ends of questionable stuff that I already figured he'd tell me to drop.

Don't and never did know what to believe, so I just carry on as I always have with a tip of the wink to a diabetes diet.

Blood tests always come back OK, so I must be doing something right.

Stoppani is big on fish oil. Most fitness people are.

He called the prostate cancer study complete bunk:

Of course, they aren't taking it for the reasons of preventing heart attacks. There are studies showing it has a positive effect on muscle growth and recovery.

My doctor wanted me to take fish oil for my cholesterol. We made a deal that she would lay off if I solved the same problem by healthier food and exercise. So far I won that one.

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

What about Omega-3 fatty acids? Are those still good for you, or no?

Googling . . .

Oh, it seems maybe they are the same thing as DHA/EPA?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega-3_fatty_acid

The three types of omega-3 fatty acids involved in human physiology are ALA (found in plant oils), EPA, and DHA (both commonly found in marine oils). Common sources of animal omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids include fish oils, egg oil, squid oils, krill oil, while some plant oils contain the omega 3 ALA fatty acid such as seabuckthorn and chia seeds, along with berry oils, clary sage seed oil, algal oil, flaxseed oil, Sacha Inchi oil, Echium oil, and hemp oil.

My wife recently bought some flaxseed oil and has been giving it to me. She also bought a bottle of DHA pills I think.

I kinda like a good olive oil now and then. My doctor demands that I take vitamin D, which kinda makes sense because I have an olive complexion and an office job, but other than that, nothing--well, tums for added calcium. And cowbell.
