They don't quarantine the doctors who work over there because Ebola can not be spread until you begin exhibiting symptoms. So instead, doctors who work over there are supposed to monitor themselves for symptoms for several weeks upon their return and check themselves into the hospital if those symptoms show up. Both of which he did. He was not a threat to anyone until he began to show symptoms. And once he began to show symptoms, he checked himself into a hospital with an isolation ward.

So there was no dumb fuckery involved, only panic on the part of people who don't understand the disease. Now, might his Ebola spread? Yes, but its as close to 100% certainty as it is capable to get in this world that if it does, it will be to other health care workers who are treating him, not to any of the people he came into contact with while "walking around New York".

If you are going to worry about dying from an infectious disease, worry about the flu. If this is an average year, we ought to see 4000 deaths, just in this country. But no one freaks out over that, it is, as The Joker would say, "part of the plan". One guy dies from Ebola and everyone loses their minds.

This article goes into why his walking around NY shouldn't worry anyone, and what precautions he took upon arriving home.

My favorite line from the article pretty much mimics my reaction to much of the hysteria I see about Ebola. I bolded it.
"It's completely unnecessary," says Harvard University's Ashish Jha, who has been studying the outbreak. "I'm a believer in an abundance of caution but I'm not a believer of an abundance of idiocy."
And one more salient point, for those demanding that anyone who has worked over there be immediately quarantined
We do not ask that doctors who treat patients with infectious disease spend their lives in quarantine — and for good reason. If the cost of treating infectious diseases was to give up everything else you love in life, no doctors would treat infectious diseases, and we would all be at much greater risk. Imagine how much worse the HIV/AIDS epidemic could have been if any doctor seeing patients weren't allowed to interact outside of the hospital. Few, if any, physicians would take that trade off.

Yeah, I tried to point that out. Actually, I think you might be missing a zero. It's closer to 40,000 per year, isn't it?

But people die from the flu every year. Ebola is new, so somehow we place more importance on new threats than old ones.

Just imagine the media shitstorm if 40 people were to be infected with ebola this year, but that's still orders of magnitude less than the flu.

Well the final quote is fallacious. HIV is rather different than Ebola diseases.

You have to work to get HIV--you have to have direct exchange of fluids that breaches the body's barriers. This is one of the reasons why it is primarily a sexually transmitted disease. Sexual practices result in abrasions and THAT is how the virus enters. That is in distinction to other "exchange of fluids" such as kissing, sharing a drink, et cetera. Obviously, direct injection of blood--such as in a transfusion--or sharing needles does the same thing. One also requires a concentration of virus--I do not have the numbers at hand but infection requires a "certain amount per unit of whatever."

Not so Ebola. The fluids are far more infectious as part of the disease process is the creation of such fluids the coagulopathy and tissue damage. The victim sheds virus all over the place--literally--and the fluid remains infectious for far longer than HIV.

The author of that statement might consider the precautions used when dealing with HIV+ patients and the handling of their waste--pretty much the same as any infected person with less scary but potentially deadly infections that are primarily blood borne and those mandated by an Ebola + patient. HIV is hardly a "Biohazard Level Oh FUCK" infectious agent.

The physician's statement is equally fatuous: precaution is not contingent upon the inconvenience of the physicians. Physicians put up with a lot more hardships and the like if they are actively practicing. She would have a point if she stressed that unless a patient demonstrates objective signs--such as fever, bloody diarrhea, or malignant flatulence--and symptoms then the patient cannot be infectious. This may not dissuade the Panicked and the Panicked Mongers anymore than 9/11 Tw00fer respond to reality. But she would then be able to point to the difference between an HIV+ patient and an Ebola patient in that in the former, one may be infectious without such signs and symptoms.

Not trashing the point of the article, just being precise. One should not fight hyperbole with more hyperbole because it can like threaten the cute children.

Why do you hate children?

Mandatory quarantines in NY, NJ for health care workers coming from West Africa

http://www.dallasnews.com/ebola/headlin ... antine.ece

Nurse has had two blood tests for Ebola, tests are negative. She does not have a fever. Chris Christie and his Twitter handlers are claiming that she did develop a fever--this based on a forehead scanner result of 101, while oral thermometers register normal temperature.
At the hospital, I was escorted to a tent that sat outside of the building. The infectious disease and emergency department doctors took my temperature and other vitals and looked puzzled. “Your temperature is 98.6,” they said. “You don't have a fever but we were told you had a fever.”

After my temperature was recorded as 98.6 on the oral thermometer, the doctor decided to see what the forehead scanner records. It read 101. The doctor felts my neck and looked at the temperature again. “There’s no way you have a fever,” he said. “Your face is just flushed.”

My blood was taken and tested for Ebola. It came back negative.
https://twitter.com/GovChristie

This is now developing into a 2016 Presidential election platform issue. Apparently Christie is bragging up his mandatory quarantine gambit on Fox News Sunday.

"Who knows what shit will be peddled for truth on this network!"

Some of that is quite true and thank you. Except.....................

The symptomatic/asymptomatic thing is not an on/off switch. If you've got Ebola, you are, in fact, capable of infecting others. It's just not as likely while you're asymptomatic because there's not enough virus in your precious bodily fluids.

Our Intrepid Health Care worker knows this and while I applaud his courage and conviction in trying to assist those in need, I think he is a goddamned fool for leaving his apartment during the (joke of a) quarantine period.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.
