Bioethicist At National Institutes of Health: "Why I Hope To Die At 75"

Ezekiel J. Emanuel, director of the Clinical Bioethics Department at the US National Institutes of Health, writes at The Atlantic that there is a simple truth that many of us seem to resist: living too long renders many of us, if not disabled, then faltering and declining, a state that may not be worse than death but is nonetheless deprived. "It robs us of our creativity and ability to contribute to work, society, the world. It transforms how people experience us, relate to us, and, most important, remember us. We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic." Emanuel says that he is isn't asking for more time than is likely nor foreshortening his life but is talking about the kind and amount of health care he will consent to after 75. "Once I have lived to 75, my approach to my health care will completely change. I won't actively end my life. But I won't try to prolong it, either."

...

I think this manic desperation to endlessly extend life is misguided and potentially destructive. For many reasons, 75 is a pretty good age to aim to stop."

A google search reveals that Ezekiel was born in 1957, making him, coincidentally, 57 years old. Let's touch base with him in 15 years and see if his opinion has matured a bit.

If life has any purpose, it is to live it.

a Senator who told Macro during Caligula's coma he would give his life if Caligula lived is forced by Caligula to commit suicide
We could work with this ...

Maybe this guy Ezekiel is floating a trial balloon. He works for the NIH, after all. So he's possibly putting out feelers for how the public will accept cutting off medical care at 75. That would certainly do wonders for Obama Care. Wouldn't hurt Social Security either. :)

Has kind of a Logan's Run feel to it.

It would have that "benefit" for just about any health care system if we could dump one of its neediest sectors.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

He's a bioethicist.

That means an apologist for state ownership of your body.

A priest of death worship.

And the brother of the mayor of Chicago.

Death at 75, except for the politically connected.

there's a lot of money in prolonging life beyond its expiration date.
we're all going to die. If you knew you were going to end up like Terri Schiavo or Ronald Reagan would you eliminate your own map before then?

except Ray Kurzweil. He can afford his immortality dream.
