Mindworm

Postby Pyrrho » Sat Nov 22, 2014 6:35 pm

Just what it says, folks.

http://mashable.com/2014/11/21/man-disc ... his-brain/

A 50-year-old man who has been suffering headaches and strange smells has finally discovered the cause of his woes: a 1 cm (0.4 inch) tapeworm in his brain.

The parasite is thought to have been burrowing through his grey matter for more than four years, moving 5 cm (2 inches) from the right side to the left.

"The worm's rarity means that little is known about its complex lifecycle and biology," the institute added. "However it is thought that people may be infected by accidentally consuming tiny infected crustaceans from lakes, eating raw meat from reptiles and amphibians or by using a raw frog poultice — a Chinese remedy to calm sore eyes."

The man, who was of Chinese descent, is thought to have picked up the parasite while on a visit to China.

ed, is China on your list of exotic locales?

Oh, and science:

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Assuming the numbers on the MRI indicate years, I am surprised that he was not treated for neurocystercercosis and, given the movement/lack of response, he did not receive the biopsy earlier. The cysts--cause by Wee Worms--do not "move" though you will get multiple.

Nevertheless, an interventricular biopsy--when the Wee Bastard is in the ventricles lateral ventricles between "Sept 09" and "Feb 10"--should have been rather routine.

Someone fucked up.

Not impressed. Saw this on House. He fixed in a single hour. Although, he destroyed the liver and kidneys by misdiagnosing six times first.
