Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH)

Postby Abdul Alhazred » Mon Jun 01, 2015 5:18 pm

This is the Jewish version of "pray the gay away".

Gay conversion therapy trial slated to begin June 2
NJ Today

Lawyers say Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH) fraudulently claimed to provide services that “convert” people from gay to straight. These services, known as conversion therapy, have been discredited or highly criticized by all major American medical, psychiatric, psychological and professional counseling organizations.

The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against the New Jersey conversion therapy organization for fraudulent practices. The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, charged that JONAH, its founder Arthur Goldberg, and counselor Alan Downing violated New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act by claiming that their counseling services could cure clients of being gay.

...

Southern Poverty Law Center?

Damn. Isn't there some way for both sides to lose?

...

The lawsuit describes sessions that involved clients undressing in front of a mirror and even a group session where young men were instructed to remove their clothing and stand naked in a circle with the counselor, Downing, who was also undressed. Another session involved a subject attempting to wrestle away two oranges – used to represent testicles – from another individual.

A long-established expression among sailors uses the term "a Jonah" to mean a person (either a sailor or a passenger) whose presence on board brings bad luck and endangers the ship.[18] Later, this meaning was extended to "a Jonah" referring to "a person who carries a jinx, one who will bring bad luck to any enterprise."

Courts are key.

The SPLC has already won several key rulings in the case.

On Feb. 5, Superior Court Judge Peter F. Bariso Jr. excluded several key defense witnesses, including Joseph Nicolosi, a founder of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), and some of the country’s other prominent conversion therapy proponents – because their opinions are based on the false premise that homosexuality is a disorder.

Bariso wrote that “the theory that homosexuality is a disorder is not novel but – like the notion that the earth is flat and the sun revolves it – instead is outdated and refuted.”

Ultimately, whether homosexuality is a "disorder" may be a value judgement and not a scientific question. And one that has no bearing on the issue of fraud.

The question is whether such "therapy" does what they claim. It does not.

APA defines a disorder as intrinsically causing distress or anti-social behavior (or both). Since 1973, APA has concluded, based on actually checking (you know, science), that homosexuality doesn't meet either requirement.

That's the standard the judge cites.

He also barred the expert testimony of an orthodox rabbi as irrelevant.

Well that's good.

But there still remains the question of whether some course of action, regimen, don't call it therapy, can change sexual orientation.

So far, no.

But if it did, the ethics of it would be a separate question from anything to do with the quackery we've seen so far.

So far, people cannot fly without mechanical assistance. So far.

Basing an ethical stance on the observation that science doesn't prove things and therefore alleging that nothing is true is unethical.

Don't be silly.

People "develop tastes" all the time, including sexual orientation. Just not to order. Like Mayor DeBlasio's wife after all. There really isn't any ethical problem here.

No I wouldn't if I could (at this point anyway), but that's not the point.

The point is the folks who allege they can change sexual orientation to order are making false claims and causing grief.

Not whether what they falsely claim to do would be ethical.

The trial continues:

Strange Practices Of Ex-Gay Therapy Revealed In Trial Testimony
Think Progress

...

What these JONAH clients experienced is at the heart of the case. They argue that these treatments were violating — that they were unfounded therapeutic practices. Doyle proceeded to defend one of these questionable methods, an exercise in which JONAH therapist Alan Downing asked plaintiff Benjamin Unger to begin stripping while staring at himself in front of a mirror. Testifying last week, Unger described how Downing stood behind him, close enough that he could feel his breathing on his neck, and put his hand on his shoulder. After taking off his shirt and undershirt, Unger explained, “Then I was told to look at my body, feel my masculinity and then I was told to go a step further which is to take my pants off.” Unger refused to take that step and said he “felt violated” by the experience.

Unger testified that he didn’t even have any body shame issues, but Doyle went so far as to characterize him as an exhibitionist. He defended the fact that after the suit was filed, Downing searched Unger’s Facebook page for pictures of him shirtless — taken years after he left JONAH’s therapy — which somehow prove, as Doyle puts it, that he “had no problem baring his half-naked body.” He’s essentially juxtaposing being in public with friends with being in a private, vulnerable setting with a much older ex-gay counselor who had admitted to Unger he still had same-sex attractions. “While this is not a mainstream technique used by licensed counselors working with clients who experience unwanted SSA,” Doyle admitted, “these practices have been used for decades in experiential healing weekends helping gay men feel better about their bodies” — a problem Unger didn’t even have.

...

Sounds like the "therapists" were not merely quacks. They were getting some bizarre sexual psychopath LULz in addition to whatever they were paid.
