As the legend goes, margarine

was originally created from beef tallow and skimmed milk in 1869 in France by Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès, as a result of a challenge proposed by Emperor Napoleon III[1] to create a substitute for butter.

Napoleon was getting tired of his favorite croissant spread going rancid while conquering Europe. His challenge was specifically a substitute for butter that had a longer shelf life at room temperature.

Nothing in the challenge said that this substitute had to be made from cow's milk, nor did it specify that it had to be proven healthy or even safe. There are lots of things that sort of taste like butter if you use your imagination. Who knows what vile concoctions Napoleon sampled from various enthusiastic French scientists who were eager to please the emperor before Nap settled on lard with a bit if skim mixed in.

It's no wonder that Napoleon died of stomach cancer.

The runner up for the contest was axel grease mixed with arsenic. So sweet.

Hmm.

So if you want to serve margarine made from beef fat in your restaurant, the menu should say "Napoleonic margarine". :BigGrin3:

Glass can be made without BPA.

Gluten free, even.

Why melt sand to make a bottle when you can simply pump dinosaur remains from under the ocean, fraction off the fuels, filter and process the residue, polymerize it, melt it, blow it into a bottle, decorate it with pretty labels, fill it with water, sell it at a vastly marked up price? Are you some kind of communist?

Other stuff was also deemed "healthy":

Nobody ever said Science was perfect.

It may take a few....decades...but eventually.

And so on.

(Holy fuck! Radium injections?)

No worse, I suppose, than all the plutonium given (unknowingly, I might add) to all those stoopit Mericans by their own gubmint.

But I'm way off topic here. So it goes.

There was a time when shoving things in your ass was considered normal. Suppositories, rectal thermometers, enemas. Shots where typically delivered on the butt cheek with a huge hypodermic needle. Folks from our grandparents generation wouldn't even blink at that stuff. I don't think my kids even know what any of those things are. Maybe I should give them a little history lesson today. I'll wait for them to whine about something first.

Wah. I don't want to take my medicine. It tastes funny.

Well, then son. We'll just have to do things the old fashioned way.

Fuck.

At my house we go through about two pounds of bacon a week. I don't give a shit what anyone says about it. I cook and I eat. I wrap all kinds of shit in bacon slices. If I die a little earlier because I like to eat food that tastes good, well, I hope I am missed but I'm going down with good food.

I love to use bacon grease to cook with.
Turns out bacon grease has less saturated fat than palm oil. Makes a mean cornbread too.

I fry my chicken in bacon grease, if I have enough. If I don't have enough, I add a little canola. Fish too, unless I'm deep frying (not wasting my bacon grease on deep frying.)

I've fried doughnuts in bacon grease, by God, and I'll do it again.

Eggs? I made a frittata last night and used a dozen. Guess what? Half a pound of bacon and almost a pound of cheese went into that frittata (also potatoes and onions.)

It was tasty.

I told my daughter the other night to stop pushing me, I'm dying as fast as I can.
