PEMF and cancer

Post by Pyrrho » Thu Apr 28, 2016 10:44 pm

Received an email from someone asking for information on PEMF and treatment of tumors.

I advised them to consult with an oncologist.

In turn I was told that they have lived more than 6 years with stage 4 terminal cancer and therefore they are "doing something right," and won't bother with oncologists.

All righty then!

Why are you the sort of person people like that go to for advice about cancer treatment?

Probably because there is a thread about "PEMF nonsense" at a certain other digital establishment that I am known to frequent.

PEMF is FDA approved to treat depression. I looked into this a couple of years back. FDA approved. Somewhat (but not a lot) better than placebo.
RESULTS:

Patients on active T-PEMF showed a clinically and statistically significant better outcome than patients treated with sham T-PEMF, with an onset of action within the first weeks of therapy.Effect size on the Hamilton 17-item Depression Rating Scale was .62 (95% confidence interval .21-1.02).

To put .62 in context, the maximum Hamilton score is ~60.

So when they say ...
CONCLUSION:

The T-PEMF treatment was superior to sham treatment in patients with treatment-resistant depression. Few side effects were observed.
They're not technically lying.

Many chemical antidepressants are only a little better.

Fair enough. I might even go for it for depression if I had a bad case of depression.

But where did the idea arise that it was a cure for cancer?

Oz MC et al. plus assorted and sundry snake oil salesmen. Basically, PEMF machines are sold in a MLM scheme.

Hopefully after exhausting every other possible alternative.
