Jesus H Christ.

She must be a genetic freak in order to not be driven by millions years of evolutionary impulses to binge eat. This is miraculous when you consider how humans are wired.

Her dedication is admirable, but I don't think I care for the look. Maybe that's just because I haven't seen it before.

I feel like a pregnant belly should be smooth and round.

Also, let's see how she looks at 9 months.

What a misleading subject line.

I figured it was going to be about some guy who looked "pregnant" from too many of these:

Could be, but if true is amazing. Humans are already wired to binge eat from evolutionary selection. Then you throw in maternal hormones and things get REALLY bad.

It claims she also stayed fit when she had her first child.

No amount of motivational posters will make a woman stay slim during pregnancy though. It's counter to our programming.

Sorta. Hunter/Gatherer types had to eat when the meat was fresh.

"Cleaning your plate" is supposedly hard wired.

You eat what's available when it's available.

Then you eat you two and it's on like Donkey Kong. I could google it for you.

The question was more about the second portion "Then you throw in maternal hormones and things get REALLY bad"

This is why kids cannot help but clean their plates of peas without parental encouragement. . . .

When my wife was pregnant with our first one she had morning sickness and of course she ate but the smell of food made her nauseous. She would go in the bedroom and close the door when I was making food because she couldn't stand the smell. Even just boiling pasta.

I know this is off topic, but I would not do her. she's far too serious. And the kid is a bummer. "Mommy, what's he doing!? Mommy make him stop!"

We will take the "she woke up and saw you" jokes as "read."

Interestingly, what causes morning sickness remains unknown. I knew someone who theorized that it resulted from a slight increase intracranial pressure caused by CO2 retention. Sooooo . . . make pregnant women hyperventilate in the morning?

However, as you suggest, "morning sickness" does not happen just "in the morning." It can happen any time of day and, yes, can be triggered by smells, particularly of foods. Just a quick G00gl3-F00 will reveal all sorts of "triggers," including you coming home at night, of course. . . . Does sink that guy's theory which is probably why he never pursued it.

--J.D.

P.S. Pregnancy has a lot of "things" about it which we still do not understand. Cravings, for example.

My own theory of it is that it's caused by hormones. I cannot tell you which chemical compound it is of course.
Basically our bodies whether you are a man or a woman make drugs essentially and these drugs can have side effects. So morning sickness is simply a side effect of pregnancy hormones. I guess not all women experience it the same just as not everyone who takes a medicine necessarily experiences the same side effects. Even in her case it seemed to be different with our second one. Possibly that's because the first one was a girl and the second one a boy. So maybe that means a different mix of hormones and different side effects.

ETA:
They did once find a drug to treat morning sickness, but that didn't work out so well. The drug was thalidomide.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

Who knows. "The Current Theory" suggests hormone levels which I will not bore with the details. Though, one study I found suggests that 90% of women suffer from some form of morning sickness. Now, how "sick" is that? Simple nausea or hurling everything?

There will also be psychological factors. Before I just looked, I wondered if the second child would tend to cause less symptoms since the woman has been through the whole "wonderful" experience: less fear of the unknown. Well, it seems it can be a bit worse possibly because Your Mum already has a child to care for while pregnant. This seems to apply to the Actually Has the Medically Namey Syndrome: hyperemesis gravidarum.

So who knows. They really do not.

Keep them safe in the kitchen if you ask me, what? What?
