Who told Willie Nelson not to sing about Jesus?

Postby gnome » Sun Apr 19, 2015 3:40 am

Big thing now around my facebook is how awesome Willie Nelson is because "they" told him not to sing about Jesus and he did anyway.

Tried to check a few stories, but couldn't find anything--was there an actual "they" or did someone make this shit up to lie for Jesus? Did he get anonymous letters or something? Atheist music promoters?

If we're persecuting them so badly, why do they have to manufacture persecution to aggrandize themselves for standing so courageously against it?

Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Unfortunately, no clue who "they" were. One article says "atheists" told him, but not who the atheists were.
It also speculates:
Worried about the backlash, TV executives likely asked Nelson to pick a more politically correct song to sing. We applaud Nelson for ignoring the atheists and continuing to be public about his love for God.

Not clear if any real person actually told him not to sing about Jesus, but it's all over the place.

Scenario:

Some guys on Facebook said Willie Nelson shouldn't sing about Jesus.

Willie being unaware of this was unavailable for comment. :lmao:

You know, that country singer that smokes a lot of pot and that other people cover a lot.

Anyway, here's the full lyrics of the song he sang. Doesn't seem to present a very convincing logical argument:

1 Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

2 Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

3 Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

4 Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?

The answer to each question is no. Furthermore, Willie Nelson wasn't there either, so where does that leave us?
But I guess logic is irrelevant to this sort of appeal.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

It's an old hymn not a Willie Nelson original.

Johnnie Cash covered it about 40 years ago.

It's an old "spiritual" from the Black community. I'd guess about 1860.
