Postby Abdul Alhazred » Fri Jun 05, 2015 4:51 pm

Church of England 'one generation away from extinction' after dramatic loss of followers
The Independent

Synopsis: C of E shrinking, Islam growing.

However reading the whole thing we find that the C of E still outnumbers Islam by more than three to one.

The kicker:
... When asked about their religious belief, the survey found that the most common response was having no religion. 49 per cent of people do not describe themselves has having any belief ...

It's dying out with my parents' generation, who were generally sent to church, Sunday School etc. Not too many of them forced it upon their own children, (few of my school friends went to church, I was one of the unlucky ones), and it's now very unusual to see youngsters at church unless it's for a wedding or funeral.
Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Same here. Churches sometimes advertise, trying to get some cash. Image

With expensive buildings to maintain, less money, less staff, less customers (State helps, of course, but for how long?), some harrowing decisions will have to be made. Image

Meanwhile the USA has no "established" church, but we're religious as ever (present company excepted).

My three local churches have been closed for many years. One is derelict and partially collapsed, one is now a power tool shop and the other is used as a polling station and for yoga classes etc., there hasn't been a religious service there in over 25 years.

Quite a few CofE churches have been sold and converted into mosques. One not too far away has been a pub for as long as I can remember.

I'm not down with the mosques, but pubs and theaters and concert halls are all right by me...

Alas, we aren't there yet. :( (And the last one has awful reviews…) But the church-pub idea appeals strongly to me – I once had coffee in a former mosque in Kavala (Northern Greece), nice cool place.

I would especially love to have a swim in a cathedral turned swimming-pool. Sun filtering through the stained glass, some good organ music, wow!

It's in student land, just by Manchester University. All the pubs are pretty dismal, I used to work there.
