CONTENT WARNING -- Trigger warning recursion.

Post by Abdul Alhazred » Wed Jun 10, 2015 6:26 pm

Like this phenomenal article, Everyday Feminism definitely believes in giving people a heads up about material that might provoke our reader’s trauma. However, we use the phrase “content warning” instead of “trigger warning,” as the word “trigger” relies on and evokes violent weaponry imagery. This could be re-traumatizing for folks who have suffered military, police, and other forms of violence. So, while warnings are so necessary and the points in this article are right on, we strongly encourage the term “content warning” instead of “trigger warning.”

If someone is that hyper sensitized to the word 'trigger', I suggest they get some serious psychological help.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

I object to the term trigger warning because to activate a trigger, you have to pull it. It's a button. You can't pull it. Instead of trigger warning, it should say suicide bomb button warning.
Such potential!

Sensitized as in theatrical.

There was a funny scene in the show about firefighters starring Denis Leary. One of the guys was in group therapy cuz he was in the WTC on 9/11. These other people were "traumatized" too. So he asks "where you in WTC 2?" And they say variations of "no but when I heard about it I was just destroyed". Same sorta thing. Theater.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

But the very word "warning" implies unpleasantness, therefore that word is potentially traumatizing. I suggest "content ahead," which is neutral yet conveys the necessary gentle admonition.

But "Ahead" implies a prominence or priority order, which is just a recreation of the same dynamic as the Patriarchy in another context.

How about just "Content"?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

No, no, the word "content" implies "contentment" and that would be a capitalist lie. Better to just put a photo of a nice fluffy cotton ball there. People will know not to go past the cotton ball.

Where's a lawyer when you need 'em?
Put the content out in plain sight. Make no statements admitting guilt unless required by law.
