The nature of consciousness.

Post by asthmatic camel » Fri Jun 30, 2017 3:36 pm

And the definition thereof.
Scientists Now Believe the Universe Itself May Be Conscious
(ANTIMEDIA) – You don’t have to look far to find outlandish theories on the nature of the cosmos and human consciousness. These days, notions once relegated to science fiction are finding their way into esoteric academic journals, and from there, into mainstream discourse. One example of this is the Simulation Argument, recently championed by Elon Musk; another is ‘time crystals,’ a tantalizing non-linear phase of matter. The newest symphony of mind jazz being broadcast across the Internet posits new ideas about the embattled theory of “panpsychism,” or the belief that mind is a fundamental property of the physical universe and is imbued into all states of matter.

A new paper, published by physicist Gregory Matloff, has brought the idea back into scientific discussions, promising experimental tests that could “validate or falsify” the concept of a ubiquitous “proto-consciousness field.” Matloff also pushes the controversial idea of volitional stars, suggesting there is actually evidence that stars control their own galactic paths.

I'm calling bullshit or a definition of consciousness so loose as to be meaningless.
Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Universe Itself is conscious?

Wow man that's really really heavy. 8)

Aw c'mon. Like there's any other kind, you meanie. :BigGrin3:

OK, so these generically described scientists are saying that The UniverseTM is GodTM.

Even though I call myself an atheist and not an agnostic, I willingly admit I can't disprove the existence of the more nebulous flavors of The Deity.

I kinda gotta agree as I either don't see or get the definition at all.

I would choose the former and caution that he has no idea what the "consciousness" is.

Looked up the Matloff guy. AFAIKT (he has no Wiki page) he's a retired specialist of solar sail & laser-beam spacecraft, with last papers published ~ end of the 90ies.

He has a site (http://www.gregmatloff.com/index.html) where he peddles his books and I extracted this from the blurb about "Observational Panpsychism":

As for his "toy model", I think I found it on a blog page (where he discusses his ideas with the readership; seems that PK & spoon bending by Geller also need more research…):

Everything should be clear from that magnificent graphic. :lmao:

As it happens I hit some days ago on an article suggesting some kind of diametrically opposite point of view:
Is Most of the Intelligence in the Universe Non-Conscious AI?

It's short, but philosophy, so Abdul shouldn't click the link.

I always like how whenever one scientist publishes a paper with a wild theory, the press exaggereates that into "scientists" as if he or she had somehow won over all the other scientists.

All we need now is for some asshole in a Guy Fawkes mask to quote it in a distorted voice on YoutTube and it will be as good as proven, at least by media standards.
