I sent that to my algebra professor over the summer, turns out he had a copy framed in his office.

Silly, but it amuses me greatly.

Well, there is a MOD...
When one considers that our planet is doomed, at least as far as life is concerned, it is impossible to put meaningful value on the titanic forward struggle of life on Earth through billions of years. This struggle, whether conscious or not, appears agonizingly futile if the gigantic mass contribution can not be perpetuated.

The question is the problem. The answer given was correct. That is x. The VALUE of x is a different matter.

That depends on whether you are a member of the set of all people who do not appear in their own jokes or not.

We need an emoticon for Whoosh!

Anyhow, for those who experienced Whoosh! my suggestion is to try the Wolfram mathematical encyclopedia on-line and see if they have entries under "referentiality" and "Russel's paradox". But it isn't funny if you have to go look it up.

Which would not be me, obviously, despite that you seem to be addressing that comment to me. I am quite aware of Russell's Paradox (the set of all sets that are not members of themselves) and many related issues in set theory (Cantor, Burali-Forti, etc), which is why I thought your comment was both funny and relevant.

Answer to your (implied) quiz question: Contrary to popular opinion at the time (i.e. naive set theory), the point Russell made was that just because a property P can be described for a set does not mean the set exists or can be constructed. The subsequent axioms of Zermelo and Fraenkel took this into account.

I did not have to go look that up. Some of us are not as stoopid as we look. :D

Boy give some guys a degree in math and they think they are the only ones who know any math on this forum. :P

Maybe as funny as the humor of a circumcision?
The most important things in life–beauty, grace, redemption, compassion, loyalty, love–are beyond the reach of reason. Which doesn’t make them any less real. Stay far back: I'm allergic to Stupid.
