Student’s stunning plea: Why did NYC let me graduate high school?

How can we expose more people to critical thinking?

Sometimes "you passed" means "thank god we can finally get you the fuck outta here."

What Pyrrho said. The incentives are to pass them, not fail them. Higher graduation rates also make the school look better.

I agree with what Pyrrho & Anax said. I'll ad that we've come from "the right to study" for everyone to "the right to succeed": strong parental pressure, political or directly on the schools & teachers. (I presume it's about the same in the US?)

A good example is the French "baccalauréat" (high school diploma), an annual hot potato endlessly debated in the press. The government wants at least 80 % success, so if one of the tests (mostly in the sciences, of course) happens to be "too difficult" the grading scale gets adapted.
Needless to say, that diploma has now become worthless – but, but… it's also the door to the university. And it woulden't do to kick out nearly everybody at the end of the first year. So the gates fall only 2 or 3 years later, destroying hopes artificially maintained. Hypocrisy.

And it's not only the Froggies. Some years ago the University of Geneva offered basic French courses for… budding students of French literature!

"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

The Queens teacher who passed a high-school student practically begging to be failed made a stunning admission Sunday — she did it because of the “tremendous amount of pressure” to just graduate kids.
“It was not an ideal situation,” McHale acknowledged to The Post at her Queens home. “If we don’t meet our academic goals, we are deemed failures as teachers. There is a tremendous amount of pressure on us as teachers.”
“I thought it was in her best interest and the school’s best interest to pass her.”
The teacher said she believes that her student spoke out because “I think she felt a sense of, ‘Why isn’t the standard higher?’ But if we set the bar higher, we would be a failing school.”

So, yeah, exactly what I thought. Really, it's hard to blame the teacher here. Student put in no effort whatsoever, and didn't even bother to show up to most of the classes. And yet the teacher is expected to make sure the student graduates and is seen as a failure if the student doesn't succeed.

People complain about "failing schools", but a large part of the problem is the students and the students' families.
If all of the parents were like the "tiger moms", this wouldn't be a problem in the first place.

Yeah it's gonna be a great future without teachers, doctors, and police officers.

I think there's enough blame to go around, but in this case, the little darling clearly didn't apply herself. And then, ponder the huge salaries of teachers everywhere.

It's not all that hard to understand why we're 24th in [fill in the blank]. :(
Nice things? Hell no!

Two problems with school:
– impinges on free time;
– doesen't always provide the success the consumer (<— and that's the state of mind) expects.

Elsewhere children are happy when they have something to write on, or books.

Sorry to quote myself, but I just read that the predictable result, given the Gallic (or even Human) indifference to the consequences of choices made, is here: school year starts in less than a month, and 7500 new students haven't yet been assigned an Alma Mater. (http://www.lemonde.fr/education/article/2015/08/06/7500-bacheliers-attendent-encore-une-place-a-l-universite_4713621_1473685.html)

Authorities are confident that a solution will be found.
