5 Awful Things Only Homeless Women Experience

Postby Abdul Alhazred » Sun Apr 17, 2016 3:30 pm

Cracked magazine click bait article.

http://www.cracked.com/personal-experie ... ience.html

The story begins ...
When Alice was in grad school, she found herself the unlucky target of a stalker ...

Alice being the woman who ended up homeless.

Not much to say about most of the article. Most likely nothing you didn't know already about female homelessness if you bothered to think about it, the Cracked style of breathless reportage notwithstanding.

But that opening sentence leaves us hanging.

What was her major? Was she a PhD?

Does she really exist? :notsure:

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this ...
https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/aliceedwardson
is her.

Snip ...
I'n a recently indoctrinated philosopher specializing in Philosophy of Language and Feminist Philosophy.

Given that I have a PhD in philosophy, I'm pretty sure that I'd be qualified to explain what that field actually is, given that everyone seems to misunderstand it.

(I was homeless once in college ...

Other circumstantial evidences.

Reading her twitter accounts ...
https://twitter.com/edwardsonalice
I think the two of you are soul mates. And you're both gay, so there's that.

OK I registered for free with a throwaway so as to see all. Plausibly the same one, though no certainty.

How did you stumble across her?

Sometimes you have to read an article carefully. Her full name was in the article, which suggests that she's probably a real person.

I wonder why the article didn't mention the PhD in philosophy?

I think that had more to do with why she ended up homeless than any of that other stuff.

If she's real.

PhD in philosophy and homelessness pretty much go together.

A couple of things that she seems to have missed:

- men homeless outnumber women - estimates vary from 60% to 80%, with the last goverment estimate on long-term homeless figures that I saw putting it at 75% male
- despite this, women's shelters get more funding than men's shelters
- in co-ed shelters, women come first for beds, etc.

I suspect, but do not have any data, that extended family is more likely to take in a woman than a man, especially if kids are involved. Having said that, the flip side is that I would also suspect kids are involved with woman more often by far, making the situation more difficult on several levels.

Homelessness sucks, and I don't see many people denying that it sucks for women just as bad as for men -- perhaps easier in some small ways, and harder in others. This just seems to be a form of "World Ending: Women Hardest Hit" story that has been floating around for years under different formats and being used by "so-called "philosopher[s] specializing in Philosophy of Language and Feminist Philosophy" for an agenda. (And who cannot spell "I'm" - that will hurt your resume).

Maybe I am just getting too cynical. Or maybe she should have spent her money getting a degree in HVAC instead of neo-Marxist study de juer.

God knows I wish I had gotten an HVAC degree some days.

Probably not. Statistically, while a degree in something like engineering or an MBA leaves you better off than something like, say, Philosophy or English Lit, any degree leaves you better off than no degree. It would follow then that even a philosophy degree leaves you less likely to be homeless than high school diploma (or being a dropout)

I'm not so sure of that.

Some employers of low paid labor might discriminate against a PhD in philosophy.

A PhD, even in philosophy, makes you less likely to have to settle for low paid labor

When I was younger and more naive about how things worked .

Professor: when I graduated, there were 5 PhDs graduating for every 1 job statistically.
Me: So that's why you became a teacher?
Professor: ... That's for getting a job as a college professor.

It never occurred to me that people get PhDs so that they can become inept bores educated inside the system to be backgroundless teachers within it. All of my best classes were taught by retirees from the field who came into academia from outside.

When I was a senior considering graduate school (in computer science, a "real" field mind you), one of my professors pointed out that in general the more education the more starting pay, except when you get to PhD.

His advice: Unless it were truly my ambition to be a college professor, bag the PhD.

Context: Go for a PhD at Dartmouth or a Masters at my local cow college.

Never regretted the decision.

Granted, I don't know how a PhD stacks up to a plain old Bachelors degree in the income department. But degree holders overall make more money than non degree holders and are less likely to be unemployed.
