Capturing CO2

Post by Witness » Thu Oct 11, 2018 1:35 am

Some Swiss are at it: http://www.climeworks.com/.

Interestingly it uses waste heat. Let's just hope it can be competitive. They think yes, of course:

So, plant some fucking trees people! And if they produce fruit you can eat, so much the better.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

That's a good idea. The only question is where to plant them. Certainly anywhere that trees grow naturally and which isn't being used for other purposes. But how much land like that is there that isn't already covered with forests?

There are limits to growth, this would be one of them.

Plankton tanks on top of skyscrapers.

Step one: Build more skyscrapers. :BigGrin3:

And then make biofuel out of the plankton.

Carbon neutral.

Now, about those skyscrapers...

Maybe ed will remember the proposed "Television City" project.

There was quite a bit of long term urban blight on the west side on mid-Manhattan due to all those abandoned docks. This has since been redeveloped as "Hudson Yards" and seems to be going OK despite the usual corruption scandals.

But in the early 1980's there was this big (I mean like really YUGE) real estate guy who proposed clearing the whole area and building a wall of immense skyscrapers (up to 150 floors for the biggest) and move the TV industry into it. There were some impressive artists' conceptions and IIRC the architects were all line up.

But the big real estate guy didn't have enough money to build the whole thing on spec, and couldn't get enough investors, though David Rockefeller no less thought it was a good idea.

That would have been so cool.

Whatever happened to that guy? :BigGrin3:

Where trees can grow, forest is the so-called "climax" state. Good example: the Mediterranean basin… before sheep and goats.

For now, the situation is:

Forests are growing again where human well-being is increasing, finds new study.

Only the rich can afford them.

It does seem to correlate with wealth, but doesn't give enough credit for those who have been well forested all along without actually increasing. Specifically Canada.

How do the trees know where the borders are? Smart trees.
