A young boy was knocked down and run over by a 5-foot-tall, 300-pound security robot at a California mall on Thursday.

Sixteen-month-old Harwin Cheng suffered a swollen foot and several scrapes in the scary encounter at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto.

That's a Dalek.

I was thinking it looks like a Stormtrooper and a Dalek had a baby.

You know that Chris Rock shtick about "how not to be getting a beat down from the cops" (something like that)?

Someone should update it with how not to piss off a robot. 8)

You know, I figured it might be something like that. Anyone who's ever been to a shopping mall or Toys R Us has probably had a toddler run into them like that. I know I have.

The parents can be happy the… uh… non-human law enforcement & security specialist diden't feel threatened. (And as for the 300 pounds, much less than that and the poor things would probably end in a dustbin, or worse. I'm sure there are enough haters around.)

Get ready, they are a'coming:
Red Shark News wrote:Is Artificial Intelligence on the verge of taking over media?

Everything most of us have learned about Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come from Hollywood. There are the time-traveling robots trying to terminate us before we can give birth to the future leaders of the rebellion, the sadistic machines taking control of spaceships and the deus ex machina which seem more human than human — and still kill us. There are even some we fall in love with, but it still doesn’t end well

AI is more prosaic than that. Well, at least it is for now.

The biggest corporations on the planet are embedding predictive intelligence into everyday apps to make our lives easier. The most obvious examples are chatbots or artificially intelligent digital agents like Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, Facebook M, and Cortana.

Another example is Facebook’s recommended photo tags which uses image recognition. Amazon provides recommended products using machine learning algorithms; Waze (a GPS and maps app) provides optimal travel routes. It is all becoming increasingly ubiquitous.

This is Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, speaking in October;“We are at a seminal moment in computing. We are evolving from a mobile-first to an AI-first world.”

Here's a worthy twitter feed. Shows lots of side-by-side short videos and pics of humans and machines doing the same job on assembly lines and in other jobs. The purpose of the feed is, I think, to raise awareness about the coming obsolescence of humans in the workforce. It does that.

Once AI gets going, they'll of course want to reproduce. Using some form of sex? Interesting question. But we will be out of the loop…
Or will they indulge in wetware exhibitionism?!?

The sngularity occurs when computers program the next generation and eventually build real Ai; should take a few milliseconds.

Elon Musk sez AI will lead to WW3.

"May be initiated not by the country leaders, but one of the AI's, if it decides that a prepemptive strike is most probable path to victory".

Sounds a bit like the doomsday device from Dr. Strangelove. If we make an AI that can unilaterally initiate a thermonuclear war, I guess we deserve the consequences. I don't think we'll be that foolish.

Since shemp settled the question in his idiosyncratic way (http://www.skepticalcommunity.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43967&start=520#p884407) I'm not afraid anymore. :P
