More moderately, though disaster makes good dystopian TV, I'm also interested in examples where the pace of technology or some revolutionary advancement at least caused some significant strife before we adapted.

Hey, this is great! Wheeeee!
Well, shit.
Ok, new rule, everybody!
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

The Romans, Caesar. Where should we start?

Lead in the aqueducts would probably be a pretty good example.

Hell, lead in our own infrastructure was probably doing a number on us for a while. I've heard speculation that tackling that may have contributed to declining crime rates 20 years later (in the 90s). Then again, lots of people have theories about that.

When has it ever failed us?

World war 1 maybe. Chemical weapons. Was that a positive advancement for humanity?

That need started the chemical revolution from which we got plastics.

I just made that up.
