Neil deGrasse Tyson Sucks

Postby Rob Lister » Fri Mar 18, 2016 12:05 pm

I got to this via PZ Myers.
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... more-27557

I'll note first that PZ tore into this guy as being an anti-intellectual reverse-snob, whatever the fuck that is.

But in the end, even PZ had to admit that Neil deGrasse Tyson sucks.

Here was the initial argument for the suckiness of Neil, to which PZ disagreed [I guess].

Neil deGrasse Tyson is, supposedly, an educator and a populariser of science; it’s his job to excite people about the mysteries of the universe, communicate information, and correct popular misconceptions. This is a noble, arduous, and thankless job, which might be why he doesn’t do it. What he actually does is make the universe boring, tell people things that they already know, and dispel misconceptions that nobody actually holds. In his TV appearances, puppeted by an invisible army of scriptwriters, this tendency is barely held in check, but in his lectures or on the internet it’s torrential; a seeping flood of grey goo, paring down the world to its driest, dullest, most colourless essentials. He likes to watch scifi films, and point out all the inaccuracies. Actually, lasers wouldn’t make any sound in space; actually a light year is a unit of space rather than time; actually, none of this is real, it’s just a collection of still images projected at speed to present the illusion of movement, and all the characters are just actors who have never really been into outer space. When the rapper B.o.B. started loudly declaring that there’s a vast conspiracy to hide that fact that the world is really flat, Neil deGrasse Tyson immediately jumped in to refute him, even featuring on a eye-stabbingly awful rap song insisting that ‘B.o.B. gotta know that the planet is a sphere, G’ – a passionate, useless, and embarrassing defence of the blindingly obvious. In a world that’s simply given, brute fact, any attempt to imagine it into an entirely different shape must be stamped out. Why? The subject-matter is cosmic and transcendental, the object-cause is petty and stupid. Neil deGrasse Tyson strides onto stage to say that actually the Earth orbits the sun, that actually living beings gain their traits through evolutionary processes, that actually your hand has five fingers, that actually cows go moo, that actually poo comes out your bum – and you are then supposed to think yes, I knew that, and imagine someone else, someone who didn’t know it already, some idiot, and think: I’m better than that person, I’m so much smarter than everyone else.
https://samkriss.wordpress.com/2016/03/ ... -in-space/

The author of that may well be an anti-intellectual reverse-snob, but he's a accurate one. And in the end even PZ had to agree that Neil sucks.

Regarding Neil, PZ ends with ...
It’s disappointing. It’s bad science. And it’s spectacularly atrocious science education.

I just think he's boring.

Neil deGrasse Tyson's day job is director of The Hayden Planetarium (affiliated with and adjacent to The American Museum of Natural History in New York City).

That is not a scientist job, nor is it an administrator job. Certainly not an educator job.
He has people for that.

It is a public relations job, heavy on the fundraising.
He is the first person in that position to be a household name.

No he does not suck at his job. But, like Peezus, he's full of shit otherwise.

Isn't this implicitly a critique of all skepticism? Sometimes it does feel like stating the blindingly obvious. Yeah, of course the Loch Ness monster isn't real and of course psychics and astrologers are full of shit. And yet there are people who really believe these things. My own mother believes in homeopathy and has some astrologer make "charts". She even had one made for me once. I guess the stuff in it was supposed to flatter me. This person had never even met me but had a lot of great things to say about me. Someone more susceptible to these things probably would have been very happy with my "chart" because it was very flattering and made it sound like I was destined to become a great leader.

Anyway, I realize it seems boring and pedantic but maybe someone needs to be the boring pedantic asshole.
Tyson is not Carl Sagan but I don't hate the guy. We can't all be brilliant and witty. I'll take a guy like Tyson who is kind of boring and pedantic but at least tries to tell the truth over someone who's really charismatic and interesting but ultimately the story they are selling you just isn't true.

PZ is a fool. Science needs good PR and popularizers. PZ effectively detracts from that, while Tyson does good work in that area.

Tyson is as good at it as anyone since Sagen. Obviously an easy comparison, but he is doing a reasonably good job at it. I guess Bill Nye shows us as # 2 on the current list.

What, is PZ simply trying to get into the news by being critical? It will not stick and it will not be helpful.

So I went and read PZ's critique of Tyson which is quite different from the one quoted in the OP. Basically it's a specialist in one field slamming someone from a different field for being wrong about something outside their own area of expertise. And yeah, PZ probably knows more about biology than Tyson does. He's just kind of a dick about it. I didn't see anything in what Tyson said to merit such a dickish put down. He was wrong about a thing. Fine. He gets really upset about it and seems to take it so personally.

Tyson will be remembered long after Meyers.

I recall reading his own description of his behavior at the Expelled premiere or whathaveyou. He succeeded in coming off as a more intolerant and obnoxious prick than Richard Dawkins. I wonder if he is secretly tormented by the fact South Park satirized Dawkins and not him.

Peezus is envious of Tyson.

Tyson gets more publicity, more money, and all around more respect from people in general.

Hmmm.

Universe Is Probably A Simulation: Neil DeGrasse Tyson

The entire universe we see around us may be nothing more than a simulation, according to famed astronomer Neil DeGresse Tyson. This theory has been debated by astronomers and astrophysicists for decades, and now, the host of the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey states the concept is, in all probability, the truth.

The Issac Asimov Memorial Debate held at the Hayden Planetarium provided researchers with a forum for discussing unusual ideas about the universe. It was here that Tyson made his pronouncement.

"What may have started as a science fiction speculation — that perhaps the universe as we know it is actually a computer simulation — has become a serious line of theoretical and experimental investigation among physicists, astrophysicists, and philosophers," the American Museum of Natural History reported.

The astronomer made the following argument in an effort to address the question. If the Cosmos is truly infinite, then every possibility has occurred somewhere. If it is possible to simulate the universe in a Matrix-type simulation, then one or more alien civilizations (in an infinite universe) has already accomplished that feat. Therefore, it stands to reason that we likely live within such a virtual reality.

To add an extra layer of confusion to the idea, it may be possible that members of virtual civilizations may, in turn, create their own simulated Cosmos. If this is the case, there may be an infinite number of virtual universes, and only one "real" one.

:?

I mean, of course I've heard speculation like this before, but personally I never really found it persuasive.

Now, the interesting question to me is, what sort of "experimental investigation" is possible to answer this question?

If a theory cannot make a falsifiable prediction, it isn't properly a scientific theory. Is there any sort of prediction that follows from us living in a simulation that would not follow from the universe not being a simulation? Something we could test with an experiment? If the answer is no, then it doesn't seem like an idea worth paying much attention to to me. Nor does it get us any closer to understanding how or why the real universe exists (there is still (at least) one "real" universe that isn't a simulation).

Of course, the most sophisticated simulation ever created by humans would be much simpler than the actual universe we live in. Seems to me it would take a truly incredible computer to simulate every detail of our universe.

A simulation of what? A real universe?

Taking place in an even realer universe, which is itself a simulation?

Wow man that's heavy.

Or is it meaningless blather and Tyson is just fucking with us peasants.
