It would, which is why I'm just a smidge skeptical of that story. I mean, fuck! It's brighter than looking at the sun on a cloudless day. You won't do that for very long and not toast your retinas.

They gave out dark glasses that you could watch it with. Dark glasses! Twenty miles away, you couldn't see a damn thing through dark glasses. So I figured the only thing that could really hurt your eyes - bright light can never hurt your eyes - is ultraviolet light. I got behind a truck windshield, because the ultraviolet can't go through glass, so that would be safe, and so I could see the damn thing. OK.
I suppose he was relying on the blink reflex to close his eyelids during the initial flash.

Yes. One person who looked at an explosion (with just one eye) had the blast burned into his retina, and could forever after see the image as a dark negative of the blast. For the rest of his life. But he might have been a liar.
