Debating on the internet for decades affords one the ability to link rather than rehash.

Clean Technica wrote:China Opens 1-Kilometer Long Solar Road

China has opened a 1-kilometer long solar road in Jinan, the capitol of Shandong province south of Beijing. The two-lane road covers 5,875 square meters and can generate up to 1 million kilowatt-hours of power annually — enough to power 800 Chinese homes, according to XinhuaNet. The electricity will be used to run street lights, billboards, surveillance cameras, and toll collection plazas. It will also be used to heat the road surface to keep it clear of snow. Any excess will be fed back into the local utility grid.

When they say it "can generate up to 1 million kilowatt-hours of power annually" is that some kind of theoretical value or what it would actually generate in practice?

That works out to 114 Kw/h on average (1,000,000 / (365*24) ). You could call it 115Kw static but since it is solar, there is no static. The installed capacity is 1Kw/m (solar standard) * 5800 square meters = 5.8Mw installed.

What they'll actually get is about 13% that in 5 years, assuming nobody actually drives on it and destroys it.

They claim:
The surface of the road is made of transparent concrete which can withstand 10 times more pressure than regular concrete, according to Slate. Beneath the concrete are solar panels that convert sunlight to electricity. Under the solar panels is an insulating layer designed to protect them from excessive heat or cold.

I don't think I've ever seen "transparent concrete". But obviously if you can't drive on it, it fails at its most important function. Slate also brings up an important issue: how slippery is this stuff?

But even all this is moot compared to the single biggest issue that most people will raise if solar roads ever go vogue: safety. Solar roads mean driving on transparent surfaces. This could mean smooth glass, or something that mixes rock and glassy materials. The transparency required for light reduces the amount of gravel and rock that could give the road enough friction to help with smooth driving. The more glassy materials you add to the road, the more you risk cars losing traction on the surface, especially in rain or snow.

Also, a rough surface means more places for dirt to accumulate. Are they going to allow real traffic on this prototype? It's all worthless if they don't test that aspect.

Also they had to shut down that Chinese solar road after 5 days partly because it was was already taking too much damage and partly because someone stole part of it.

How about piezoelectric roads?

Given the earthquakes in places like California, Japan, China, and other places, we should have . . .

( •_•)

(⌐■_■)

STATIC electric roads.

Now that's thinking out of the box!
