You don't mind if I change your mind?

Yes, this can be a scary topic: machines designed to influence human beliefs and behaviors. But there’s good news. We believe that much like human persuaders, persuasive technologies can bring about positive changes in many domains, including health, business, safety, and education.

We also believe that new advances in technology can help promote world peace in 30 years. With such positive ends in mind, we are creating a body of expertise in the design, theory, and analysis of persuasive technologies, an area called captology.

If the ends are positive, the means can't be bad, right? :P

In so far as the "ends" are programmed by people, it's still just people persuading people.

Just add it to the list of speech, preach, screech, books, filmstrips, etc

And I do not see this as being some sort of irresistible Svengali, as seems to be implied.

Why can't they invent a machine to change my diapers? I'll probably need it in a few years.
"It is not I who is mad! It is I who is crazy!" -- Ren Hoek

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

"God is the supreme excuse for human adults to absolve themselves of any obligation to preserve natural resources for their own children during their lifetime." -- Gene Ray

For now…

That being said, I'm always weary of people who think they have an answer for everything.

We also believe that new advances in technology can help promote world peace in 30 years.
That's easy if ends justify the means.

Taking no risks: "can help promote world peace in 30 years". Can. Can help. Can help promote. (Reminds of all the papers cowardly titled "toward(s) <this or that>".)
Perhaps they're targeting business managers and soon poor Pyrrho will have to attend Captology Seminars© and include the Captology Applet© in his webpages?
