They still use 7.65 in Europe? Thought that went out with the end of WW2.

Before I comment on penetrating power, may I ask how many shots were fired at the truck?

European police had used the .32 for a century -- it was very popular in the 50s and was almost universal through the 60s. they have been phasing it out, but I think you can still find some police services - especially in smaller towns or cities - that still use it.

They had pistols - short barrels. The load is on the light end, but certainly capable of shattering windshields. It would not penetrate a truck very well. And with a relatively low powered pistol, I would think they would have to be pretty close to the target to do much good if he was in a truck.

(I thought about the ice cream/not a refrigerated truck question myself when the news hit)

My point is tht if they fired not at all, they could have had a Barrett for all the good it would do.

Probably, but details are scarce.

Ugly things are coming up.

Nice is one of the most "video-surveillanced" cities. The mayor who implemented that is/was very proud of it, and even sneered a bit at Paris after the shootings. ("Woulden't have happened here", &c.)
Yeah, sure.

Now in a strange move justice has demanded that all the footage from all the cameras (24 h containing the truck rampage) be erased from the city's computers. (Said justice has copies, of course.)
Alleged reason: avoiding leaks on social media.
Town hall isen't buying it and has flatly declined.

I can understand that, as these videos will be strong elements when it comes to allocate responsibilities. That the mayor and his staff are in open conflict with the local préfet (representing the central government) since many years won't help.

Following the numerous criticisms Paris has promised "transparency" and initiated an administrative inquiry into the workings of the various polices. The trick is this will only determine if cop X correctly followed orders. And will have absolutely nothing to say about the relevance of the implemented security measures (which would, it seems, require a parliamentary inquiry commission).

And for the farcical element: some avocado from Nice, pretending to be and/or have been defense attorney for the truck driver, blathered at length in the media.
Summoned to his hierarchical superior about these lies, he… tried to commit suicide.

The lady who was in charge of the city cameras that fatal night had to write a report for the judge in charge. Went to the press saying that Paris had sent cops who tried to convince her that she should confirm national police's presence in places where, she says, she haden't seen them.
Interior minister announced he would sue against that allegation. (French journalists have trouble distinguishing "he said that he will" and "has". )

So either what she says is true, or it's a smokescreen from town hall.

Anyway it starts stinking.

Should really be Clusterfuck: France at this point.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36900233

One of the attackers suspected of killing a priest at a church in north France was on probation and wearing a surveillance tag, officials say.
Prosecutor Francois Molins identified the suspect as Adel Kermiche, 19, who was twice arrested last year trying to reach Syria.
Kermiche and a fellow attacker stormed the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, a suburb of Rouen, during morning Mass.
They slit the throat of the elderly priest before being killed by police.

Great job France.

...
The Islamic State, through its affiliated Amaq news agency, quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, which sent panicked pedestrians fleeing into side streets and prompted police to seal off the renowned Champs-Elysee, close metro stations and order tourists back into their hotels. The terrorist organization said the attack was carried out by a Belgian national it identified only as Abu Yusuf al-Baljiki, a pseudonym.

There was no immediate confirmation that the Islamic State was behind the shooting. French officials declined to attach a motive to the attack, although they said police were deliberately targeted and that they were opening a terrorism investigation.

A European security official told The Washington Post that the dead attacker was known to French intelligence, having previously come to authorities’ attention for radical Islamist links. Two officials said the gunman used an AK-47 assault rifle in the attack.

Okay, that seems fairly straight forward...

...
“It’s too early to say what’s behind this, but clearly police were the target,” he said. “We don’t know yet what his motivations were.” There were conflicting reports about whether another person was in the gunman’s car.

It is standard practice to begin a police investigation without making assumptions or jumping to conclusions. Everyone knows he is almost certainly a jihadist but you still need to gather evidence.

Some days before two (French) guys were arrested in Marseille, apparently planning an attack on the headquarters of one of the politicians competing for the presidential elections.

Still unclear if they had been to Syria.

Is it unclear whether they are Muslims (which is not inconsistent with being 100% French)?

Meanwhile: Marine Le Pen gets poll boost after Paris attack as Donald Trump says her chances of victory have improved

Donald Trump has said the Paris terrorist attack would boost Marine Le Pen's presidential chances after a last-minute poll gave her a modest increase in support.

The US president said the shooting would "probably help" Ms Le Pen in Sunday's election, because she is "strongest on borders, and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France."

"Whoever is the toughest on radical Islamic terrorism, and whoever is the toughest at the borders, will do well in the election," he said.
Okay, thank you comrade Donald....do we have a French Election thread somewhere?

Well until I see one, this is where it goes: Live French election live: Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron leading the race as polls open

Turnout in the first round of France's hotly contest presidential elections was higher than expected at midday, after recent polls suggested that more than a third may stay away from polling booths.

At midday, the interior ministry said that 28.54 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballot, compared with 28.29 percent in 2012.

Around 67,000 polling stations opened early Sunday for some 47 million eligible voters, who will choose between 11 candidates. Sunday's vote is the most unpredictable election in generations.

Will Emmanuel get those Frenches to 'stay the course?'
Or will Marine convince them to bail on their welcome policies?

:dunno:

The media has been really interesting controlling narratives here in the US. As much as I loathe Tucker Carlson, he stopped a guest midsentence to ask how Le Pen was "far right" as the person had just casually said.

The person basically fell back on 'iduno, everyone is saying it' and Tucker rightly called it out as dog whistling that LePen is so excited kind of Nazi and anyway dismissing opposing views by negative inference.

If LePen wins, it's because the French Hicks got tired of the same goddamn nonsense.

A middle finger to the media class and their lazy doublespeak.

France where we have far right socialist feminists.
