The enemy of my enemy...

Post by gnome » Mon Dec 12, 2011 2:19 pm

I want to talk about the phenomenon of enjoying a politician or political speaker just because they anger the opposition so much.

I have heard this literally about Ann Coulter--some fans of hers have professed that their favorite thing about her is how she can get liberals frothing-at-the-mouth angry.

There are possibly similar examples on the left (Olberman maybe? Moore?)--but the concept applies even if one's approval is not vocal. It may remain a guilty pleasure for a liberal to see a conservative upset about an idea, or vice versa.

What I want to examine is WHY it's a "guilty" pleasure--which implies that it's wrong, and I think it is. The reason I consider it a problem is because despite the common wedge issues, and their legitimate ideological differences, Americans agree politically about bigger things than those over which they disagree.

What that means is, if a liberal is hopping mad about an idea, it's struck them to a core that contains many values in common with a conservative--and so, chances are it's in some way anathema to the conservative's values also. Again this goes in reverse just as well. The problem is we're so busy jeering at our political rivals that it's easy to cheer on statements that go well beyond what we actually believe.

Think about the "Liberal hunting permit" -- how many people who have those bumperstickers literally wish they could just go shooting at people they disagree with? Nyarlathotep would surely say most of them. I argue a lot fewer--chances are the guy in that car is not in fact in favor of legalized murder. But because the idea pisses off liberals so much, they like to play at it. It's trolling.

The problem is that if we delve too far into this, ideas that were invented for "trolling" start to surface in public policy. And the cheering starts to look like votes to politicans toying with the idea.

Can we stifle such instincts in ourselves? Surely not entirely. But it's something to think about.

Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Possibly. Why would I want to?

But it's something to think about.
Nope.

Depends on if you want political "Trolling" to become actual policy.

It was ever thus, modulo the new terminology.

But sometimes the enemy of your enemy is just everybody's enemy.

Even if it's been going on forever, it can still be wrong. But your second sentence indicates that you may understand where I'm coming from on this. Good enough for me.
