North Koreans Are No-Shows at Meeting to Discuss U.S. Soldiers’ Remains
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean officials did not show up on Thursday for a meeting with Americans at the inter-Korean border to discuss the return of remains of United States soldiers killed in the Korean War, officials said.

Kim Jong-un, the North’s leader, committed to repatriating American soldiers’ remains in his June talks with President Trump. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week, after meeting with officials in North Korea, that working-level talks on the matter would be held on or around Thursday in Panmunjom, the so-called truce village on the border between North and South Korea.

Though American military officials went to Panmunjom for the meeting on Thursday, their North Korean counterparts did not, according to a United States defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. A South Korean government official, who also asked for anonymity, confirmed that the North Koreans had not shown up at Panmunjom.

It was not clear whether the Americans had been deliberately stood up. Mr. Pompeo had cautioned that the date for the planned meeting at Panmunjom “could move by one day or two,” indicating that the two sides had not settled all the details before he left Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, on Saturday.
Mr. Pompeo said his discussions in Pyongyang had been productive, though he left without a North Korean agreement to take specific steps toward dismantling its nuclear weapons program. North Korea later said it was seriously disappointed by Mr. Pompeo’s visit, accusing him of making a “unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization,” while failing to offer corresponding American incentives to improve ties between the two countries.
It was too good to be true.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

Donald Trump tweets 'very nice' letter from Kim Jong-un

US President Donald Trump has published a letter from Kim Jong-un, in which North Korea's leader voices hopes for a "new future" in bilateral relations.

Mr Trump said the letter from Mr Kim (dated 6 July), was "a very nice note".

But it made no mention of any efforts by Pyongyang towards denuclearisation - a key issue the two leaders discussed at June's historic summit in Singapore.

Separately, the US has accused North Korea of violating a UN sanctions cap on refined oil products.

It said this had been done through ship-to-ship transfers at sea using 89 North Korean tankers. The US did not say which countries were illicitly providing Pyongyang with the products.
[…]
The English translation of the four-paragraph document was tweeted by Mr Trump on Thursday.

In it, Mr Kim says: "I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr President.

He also says that bilateral trust should be "further strengthened in the future process of taking practical actions".

Mr Kim says that "the epochal progress" in promoting bilateral ties "will bring our next meeting forward".

In publishing the letter, President Trump tweeted: "Great progress being made!" He did not elaborate.

Trump cancels Pompeo trip to North Korea, cites lack of 'sufficient progress' on denuclearization
President Donald Trump on Friday announced on Twitter that he had asked his secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to cancel a planned trip to North Korea because there had not been enough progress in denuclearization talks so far.

I will now Blame the War Monger Trump for failing to reach out and embrace peace and negotiation after denouncing him for committing treason by meeting with a murderous dictator.

It was worth a try. Perhaps all is not lost yet, although it increasingly looks like the Norks were just up to their usual tricks again.

To take this serious for a moment penguin, there is a great big gulf between appeasement and bombing back into the Stone Age. Partisans seem to see only the extremes.

As is known and obvious China holds all the card when it comes to North Korea. Seems Trump ignorantly sabotages himself by working with China on North Korea and against China on trade; or he's going all in on pressure on China to get multiple wins, or something else. Whatever the case negotiations continue in both arenas.

"It's complicated."

Trump or any administration has to play many cards with China. If "we" wanted their full backing to do whatever, "we" would let them take Taiwan, for example. So it is push here and pull there. Underneath it all is the realization that economics is rich people trying to get richer without forcing the peasants to successfully revolt, while the reality of geopolitics is China does not want millions of starving North Koreans pouring into her any more than Your Mom "we" want to have to destroy North Korea to save some hippies in Seattle.

Landmines in DMZ to be cleared from Monday

The two Koreas will start clearing mines from the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on October 1 as a first step after they agreed to disarm the border area starting with land mines.

For 20 days from Monday, Seoul and Pyongyang plan to remove all mines from the Joint Security Area (JSA) along the DMZ, the Ministry of National Defense said, Sunday.

"The two Koreas will engage in joint works to remove mines and explosives on the JSA and upland areas in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province," a military official said.

The remains of about 300 soldiers from the two Koreas and United Nation forces killed during the 1950-1953 Korean War are believed to be buried in the upland areas.

The two Koreas chose the area as a trial venue for the joint repatriation mission.

The move is part of a follow-up measure to the Pyongyang Declaration signed in mid-September by President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Kim Jong-un 'Spent $4 Billion on Luxury Goods in 6 Years'

North Korea spent at least US$4 billion on luxury cars, watches and jewelry since Kim Jong-un came to power in 2012, analysis of Chinese customs data suggests.

The products were bought either for direct use by the ruling Kim family or as gifts to buy the loyalty of the elite.

Last year alone, North Korea spent $640.8 million on luxury goods despite international sanctions banning their sale to the impoverished country. That is equivalent to 17.8 percent of North Korea's total imports from China last year of $3.7 billion.

Liberty Korea Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun on Sunday said that he analyzed the Chinese data and found that the North blew $4.04 billion on luxury goods from 2012 to 2017.

That broke down into $2 billion worth of electronics, $1.4 billion worth of luxury cars, $165 million worth of liquor, $147 million worth of optical equipment, $52.5 million worth of cosmetics and perfume, $49 million worth of watches, $48 million worth of leather goods, $47 million worth of fur coats, $37.6 million worth of fine carpets, $36 million worth of luxury boats, $12.4 million worth of musical instruments and $7.11 million worth of jewelry.

The cars include Kim's bulletproof Mercedes-Benz and a Rolls-Royce believed to have been added to his official rides recently. Luxury cars and watches are favorite gifts for loyal apparatchiks.

Court to set date for resuming trial in Kim Jong Nam's death

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A Malaysian court is scheduled to set a new date for starting the defense phase of the trial for two Southeast Asian women charged with murdering the North Korean leader's half brother.

A High Court judge in August found there was enough evidence to infer that Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, along with four missing North Korean suspects, had engaged in a "well-planned conspiracy" to kill Kim Jong Nam.

Police escorted the women into the courthouse on Wednesday.

They are accused of smearing VX nerve agent on Kim's face in an airport last year and have said they thought they were playing a harmless prank. Their lawyers have told the judge both women would testify under oath in their defense.

I think they were probably gullible patsies tricked into commiting murder by diobolical North Korean agents who, of course, escaped and left them to their fate once they had fulfilled their roles as pawns in this game.

Of course, it's possible that they knew what they were doing, but I can also imagine the scenario where they were simply duped into this and didn't understand what they were doing.

WASHINGTON — North Korea is moving ahead with its ballistic missile program at 16 hidden bases that have been identified in new commercial satellite images, a network long known to American intelligence agencies but left undiscussed as President Trump claims to have neutralized the North’s nuclear threat.
...
The secret ballistic missile bases were identified in a detailed study published Monday by the Beyond Parallel program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a major think tank in Washington.
WMD you say?
Wait a minute...
Wasn't the NYT one of the cheerleaders for War in Iraq?
...
Mr. Blix and Dr. ElBaradei cannot be left to play games of hide-and-seek. This is not like Washington's unproved assertions about an alliance between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. There is ample evidence that Iraq has produced highly toxic VX nerve gas and anthrax and has the capacity to produce a lot more.
Yea, I thougth so...So maybe NYT credibility on this subject is at least somewhat less than stellar?
