And even once the distribution rights clusterfuck is solved, I have total confidence in the power of the government to fuck this up somehow.

High Returns: Colorado Pot Sales Over $100 Million a Month Is 'the New Norm'
...
Colorado sold over $127.7 million worth of cannabis flower, edible products and concentrates in May, according to The Cannabist’s analysis of the state’s marijuana tax data. More than $35.7 million of sales stemmed from medical marijuana purchases, and recreational-use items generated $90.1 million in sales.

Bethany Gomez, director of research for marijuana market research firm Brightfield Group, told the site that hitting the $100 million mark has become “the new norm” in Colorado, with some $1.4 billion in sales between May 2016 and May 2017. During that time, Colorado racked up over $233 million in taxes and license fees.

Massachusetts court rules for woman fired for medical marijuana use

Massachusetts court rules for woman fired for medical marijuana use
BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts' top court on Monday ruled that a woman who had been fired for testing positive for marijuana that she had been legally prescribed under state law could sue her former employer for handicap discrimination.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court rejected the former employer's argument that she could not sue it for handicap discrimination because possessing marijuana remains illegal under federal law.

Lawyers for the former employee, Christina Barbuto, said the ruling represents a major win for employees in the state and set a precedent that they said could have an impact in other states where medical marijuana is legal.

However...

Jeff Sessions personally asked Congress to let him prosecute medical-marijuana providers
Attorney General Jeff Sessions is asking congressional leaders to undo federal medical-marijuana protections that have been in place since 2014, according to a May letter that became public Monday.
Yep, MEDICAL marijuana...
...
In his letter, first obtained by Tom Angell of Massroots.com and verified independently by The Washington Post, Sessions argued that the amendment would "inhibit [the Justice Department's] authority to enforce the Controlled Substances Act." He continues:
I believe it would be unwise for Congress to restrict the discretion of the Department to fund particular prosecutions, particularly in the midst of an historic drug epidemic and potentially long-term uptick in violent crime. The Department must be in a position to use all laws available to combat the transnational drug organizations and dangerous drug traffickers who threaten American lives.
...
A growing body of research (acknowledged by the National Institute on Drug Abuse) has shown that opiate deaths and overdoses actually decrease in states with medical marijuana laws on the books.

That research strongly suggests that cracking down on medical-marijuana laws, as Sessions requested, could perversely make the opiates epidemic even worse.
I told ya so!

But since Jeff is currently in the Dawg house, lets see a recent poll....

Marijuana legalization support at all-time high
A recent CBS News poll shows support for legalizing marijuana is higher than ever.

Sixty-one percent of Americans think marijuana use should be legal, a five-point increase from last year and the highest percentage ever recorded in this poll. Eighty-eight percent favor medical marijuana use.

Seventy-one percent oppose the federal government’s efforts to stop marijuana sales and its use in states that have legalized it, including opposition from most Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
...
This sentiment cuts across party lines: Majorities of Republicans (63 percent), Democrats (76 percent), and independents (72 percent) oppose the federal government trying to stop marijuana use in these states.
Talk about bi-partisan support, we have tri-partisan support!

And yet, the federal government wants to crack down more than ever on legal pot.

Because a high level of support across the board is irrelevant to them. The war on drugs (pot included) gives them all sorts of pretenses for ignoring people's civil liberties. That is more important to the politicians than whatever small bump in popularity they would get by supporting pot legalization. Thus, I don't think it will ever be legal on a federal level. Not in our lifetimes.

100% correct, but you left out that there's money involved too.

Oh yeah, money is also part of it. I know one of the big stumbling blocks in Nevada was a huge amount of opposition from the Liquor and Casino industries, who didn't want the competition in the "taking your mind off of how much life sucks by ingestion of a mind altering substance" racket. And, unsurprisingly, legalization only got through because enough Nevadans signed a petition to get it made a ballot question, rather than going through our state legislature. If we had to rely on them, it never would have even made it to the floor, much less passed. Because not only would there have been big money involved from lobbyists for the booze and casino interests, many of our legislators are in one of those businesses or the other themselves.

But there is no similar process on the national level, so pot will never become legal on that level. Too convienent for politicians and too much money under the staus quo to be made for that to ever change.

Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire and a HUGE donor to the GOP, bought up the unprofitable Las Vegas Review Journal in order to get them to reverse their editorial stance on pot legalization.

Given that, anyone who thinks he isn't going to generously grease the wheels in Congress to keep pot illegal is fooling themselves. And that's just ONE billionaire

And yet the federal government is fighting harder than ever to reverse that trend. And where it has become legal it has mostly been states like Nevada where the legislature can be bypassed by ballot initiatives. There is no such option at the federal level, nor is it available to every state. Far easier for monied interests to influence a handful of legislators than an entire state's citizenry.

I confidently predict that trend will come to an end soon, and would put even money on it reversing itself in the next few years. Either by states re-criminalizing it and/or Sessions getting his was and cracking down from the federal level on legal distributors.

Yeah but based on the current trends it's going in the opposite direction and accelerating.

Yeah that's why Clinton won
